'Friends' is a great album, I agree with you there, but 'transcendental meditation' is a crap song and should have been replaced by 'I went to sleep' (which was recorded around the same time)--then it would have been a perfect record.
Friends is one of their best and most underrated albums (although has many fans here), and an absolute pleasure to listen to.

'Hoops Hooley' is a definite highlight of this album, the finest approximation yet The High Llamas have achieved of the instrumentals from The Beach Boys 'Friends' album.

 REMEMBERING PAPA JOHN PHILLIPS
The Beach Boys, however, were represented by Bruce Johnston, and Mike Love, who told the audience, "Nobody loved the Mamas and the Papas more than the Beach Boys." They sang "Kokomo," their 1988 hit that was written by Phillips, McKenzie, Love and Terry Melcher, who jumped in gamely on the unrehearsed rendition of the song.
In keeping with the spirit of John Phillips' own freewheeling life, participants acknowledged his estimable musical contributions as a songwriter and vocal arranger as well as the tumultuous lifestyle that led to a nasty breakup with his wife, the Mamas and the Papas' Michelle Phillips, and his struggles with alcohol and drugs.
Close to 300 fans, friends, fellow musicians and members of his large and scattered family turned out for a hastily assembled memorial for a man whose music evoked an image of California as seductively idyllic as his own life was wildly stormy.

Death of a Beach Boy - People Magazine 1/16/84
As friends and family mourned Wilson's death, they drew a portrait of a vastly untidy life, one forgivable in a teenager, pitiable in a middle-aged man. Athletic, wild and charming, he had the surfer's indifference to possessions, squandering millions on good times and friends.
"The punishments were outrageous." Small wonder that Dennis, having discovered the exhilarating freedom of the surfboard at 13, would help inspire the band's vision of rebellion and freedom in the teen beach culture.
Manson and Wilson apparently collaborated on one song (Never Learn Not to Love, on the Boys' 20/20 LP), but Dennis wised up and got the maniac out of his life some time before the grisly 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders.

He recorded as part of the duo Bruce and Terry ("Summer Means Fun") with Doris Day's son, Terry Melcher, produced the Rip Chords ("Hey Little Cobra") and on April 9, 1965, officially became one of the Beach Boys.
Bruce was driving on the San Diego Freeway, working his way up the steep incline toward Mullholland Drive, when he got the idea for "I Write the Songs." He took the next offramp and returned home so he could work out the tune on the piano, and made a cassette of his new tune.

Brian Wilson :: Official Web Site
Wilson’s emphasis on the creation of personal song shapes and personally chosen instrumentation has of course had widespread influence, notably with such important new pop thinkers as Sean O’Hagan of the High Llamas (who at one point in the mid-’90s was in discussions with the Beach Boys to produce their next album).
The Beach Boys had at that point been a chart-topping band for four years with their slew of Wilson-penned teen odes to surf and sand, California gurrls, bitchin cars and dancin’ the night away.
For his part, Wilson did feel perhaps too much responsibility to his clan, and the prospect of loosening the foundations for the hordes of family, friends and record company execs who depended on him for their livelihoods hit him hard.

Most of the covers are mistakes, part of a misguided attempt by the aging Beach Boys to recapture the energy of their youth.
Of the band originals, the good-time standard "It's OK" and the quirky, endearing "Had to Phone Ya" are excellent, reminiscent of Brian's odd pop songs on late-'60s albums like Friends and 20/20.

 The Apples in Stereo
The song, which appears here in both polished and demo form, is a sugary treat filled with "Ooo-waa Ooo-waa"s, and lyrics about the tribulations of being a superheroine who never has time to play with her friends.
The band rounds out the disc with a beautiful acoustic outtake of "Stream Running Over" from their most recent album, and with a fairly bad live cover of the Beach Boys&; "Heroes and Villains." This latter failure to directly cover their heroes, however, only highlights the Apples’ skill at covering them indirectly.
This rock solipsism comes very much in handy for a band like the Apples in Stereo, who’ve built a career on partying like it’s 1965.
