Friends World Program is an international studies college with regional centers scattered around the globe.
It was founded as Friends World College by the New York Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1965, but became non-sectarian in the mid-1970s.
The emphasis is on cultural studies, arts, language, development and sustainability issues, and international relations, but Friends World students study a wide variety of subjects under the instruction and guidance of their advisors.

The Program's worldwide facilities offer students the opportunity to live and study in two or more other cultures while earning an accredited Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies; to design individual programs of study based on their personal interests and goals; and to combine academic study with field experience and internships.
Friends World students typically spend at least two years abroad working with center faculty members to design and carry out field studies (such as internships, apprenticeships, and investigative research) in several cultural settings.

When I graduated in 1983, it was Friends World College, and in 1999 when Marla graduated, it was Friends World Program (a part of Long Island University), but basically it was the same difference.
Maybe she was drawn to join Friends World, recognizing in it an opportunity to be herself, “do her own thing,” but maybe her college experience did little or nothing to draw out the strengths and determination she showed later on.
Or maybe Friends World brought out the ‘worst’ in her, making her foolhardy and single-minded about perceived injustices, when if she had gone to a normal college maybe she could be living a normal life right now, far from the front lines of our world war.
