The event, of course, was the opening of the Friendship Bridge, the first land link in history between Thailand and Laos.
People crossing the bridge without their own vehicle take a shuttle bus which runs every 20 minutes between the customs desk on the Lao side and a terminal beyond the checkpoint on the Thai side.
The bridge continues to evolve, as surely as Laos’s joining ASEAN this year show that the spirit of cooperation is here to stay.

The Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge (Thai Saphan Mittaphap Thai-Lao) is a bridge over the Mekong, connecting Nong Khai province and the city of Nong Khai in Thailand and Vientiane in Laos.
Opened on April 8, 1994, it was the first bridge crossing the lower Mekong, and the second on the full course of the Mekong.
The bridge was built by Australian companies as a demonstration of the capabilities of their ability to complete major infrastructural projects in southeast Asia.

As long ago as the late 1950s, proposal for a bridge across the Mekong River were put forward by the United States and in early 1960's a combined road and rail proposal for a bridge with a continued rail link to Vientiane was submitted by the Japanese.
The bridge is part of Australia’s aid programme to both countries, a programme which aims to promote sustainable economic and social advancement, in response to Australia’s humanitarian concerns and in line with foreign policy and commercial interests.
In early March 1994 a one-day seminar was held to discuss various impacts of the bridge, and in particular to discuss the negative aspects of the bridge.
