In sailing, a sloop is a vessel with a single mast on which is hoisted a fore-and-aft rigged mainsail and a single jib, plus extras such as a spinnaker.
To maximize the amount of sail carried, the classical sloop may use a bowsprit, which is essentially a fixed boom that projects from the front of the boat.
Sloops in their modern form were developed by the French to run British blockades.

The Friendship Sloop has no real birth, but was gradually developed around 1880 from the fishing and lobstering needs of the men of Muscongus Bay on the Maine coast.
Some sloops were dragged onto the ice in the spring and left to float as the ice melted.
In 1961 fourteen Sloops sailed in a regatta, and the Friendship Sloop Society was born.

I recently purchased a 23-foot Ahern-designed Friendship sloop and have found her to be quite overcanvassed and under-ballasted.
I recall many hours of joyously bracing myself in the cockpit of a narrow Baltic Sea sloop that would dip its rail in 12 knots of breeze, but didn't need to be reefed unless a whole gale was blowing.
A Friendship is a graceful boat of long overhangs and shallow body that actually looks good at great angles of heel.
