Du Plessis, Porta and Fitzpatrick were in Monte Carlo as founder members of the Laureus Sports Academy, a body of former sportsmen who will gather each year to bestow Laureus decorations on current leading sportsmen.
According to Du Plessis it was Porta who pondered whether rugby should set up an academy of its own - not to bestow awards but to establish a learned college of former players to preserve the ethics and values of the past and to provide advice on the direction the game should take.
From a more parochial point of view, Du Plessis also lamented the fact that South African rugby was not making use of the human assets at its disposal.

Although having ended his playing career more than 30 years ago, Du Preez still has the drawing power to fill a large room with paying guests and this he again did at a breakfast on Wednesday to launch his autobiography, Frik: The Autobiography Of A Legend.

Frik: The Autobiography Of A Legend is published by Don Nelson Publishers.

Prominent white Springboks such as Carel du Plessis and Morne du Plessis (no relation) as well 96-year-old George Daneel -- the oldest living Springbok -- were also presented with new blazers.
They represented the white-run South African Rugby Board (SARB) Springboks and at least had the chance of playing international rugby against the likes of New Zealand and the British Lions, although South Africa's pariah status meant the players of the 1970s and 1980s collected only a fraction of the caps they might have expected.
Some of their white teammates, including legendary lock forward Frik du Preez, have boycotted the ceremonies, complaining that the honor of being a Springbok had been diluted.
