Frio County in the Winter Garden Region of Southwest Texas, shares its eastern border with Atascosa county, its southern border with LaSalle county, its western border with Zavala county, and its northern border with Medina County.
Frio county forms a rectangle thirty-seven miles east to west and thirty miles north to south; it comprises 725,004 acres or 1,133 square miles.
The countyÂ’s population was 13, 472 in 1990 and 16,252 in 2000, an increase of 2, 780.

The county terrain of flat to slightly undulating plains is surfaced by deep to moderately deep, light-colored loam and underlain by limestone and calcareous to neutral clayey subsoils.
Frio County farmers can expect a growing season of 276 days and an average of twenty-five inches of rainfall a year; the last freeze typically occurs in late February and the first freeze of the new winter in early December.

PEARSALL - Off the main road stands a solitary reminder of a frontier community, the old Frio City courthouse, and in the 1870s it was at the heart of a boom town called Frio City on the Texas frontier, a destination on the Old Presidio Road.
It was the cowboy capitol and culture center of Frio County.
Today the Old Frio City jail is a charming relic, but it is easy to forget there was a reason it was built to begin with.

Travis County plans to send 100 inmates to a jail near San Antonio that, although recently upgraded, has been cited for violating state rules and recently lost a federal contract after five inmates escaped in broad daylight.
The inmates are being sent to the Frio County Detention Facility in Pearsall.
But the space in Frio County is available almost one year after the U.S. Marshals Service removed 240 federal inmates because five of their prisoners escaped in August 2004.
