Fritz 8 Deluxe for PC Review - PC Fritz 8 Deluxe Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Fritz 8 Deluxe, on the other hand, in spite of its new 3D board sets and chatty AI opponent, is filled with in-depth analysis tools, serious database capabilities, and even tools to allow you to analyze various chess engines' capabilities (Fritz 8 allows you to choose from a variety of playing engines).
Fritz 8 offers a wide variety of playing modes, including every time control you can think of, a blitz mode, several tournament setups, and even a "shuffle" mode in which the back pieces are rearranged in a random manner.
Fritz 8 lacks the multitude of preset AI opponents that are bundled with Chessmaster, although you can adjust the AI's playing style and strength to create a variety of opponents.

 Fritz Chess 9
The Fritz games never resort to such tactics and always make good decisions, even when trying to accommodate beginners, which is a method that encourages beginners to adopt good practices and in the long run, become stronger players.
Fritz Chess 9 is still the superb chess experience that Fritz 8 was and the new features are all welcome.
Whilst it's great to see the inclusions of Giveaway Chess and Chess 960, my favourite is the Friend Mode because the AI adapts to your playing strengths and no matter how poor your are to begin with or how good you become it still manages to give you a challenging game.

Fritz 9 is a good engine, but in every tournament that I have put it in with engines such as Toga II or Kutula and Ruffian, it finishes third or fourth best, which is not exactly what you expect from chessbase's newest engine.
Fritz 9 is $10 cheaper with an engine that can compete (note compete, not always beat, but compete and even loose) with Hiarcs 10 and Shredder 10.
Fritz 9 is nice to have but absolutely not necessary, but it is still a great engine, and not as bad as many would like to make it out to be.

Fritz Chess 9 PC Video Game Review by AceGamez
Chess is hard to put in any other context than as a thinking man's board game of choice.
Don't be put off if you are a chess novice though, as there is a whole training program that attempts to teach you the game, from the simplest basics, right up to advanced techniques.
However, it also attempts to expand its remit to novices and intermediates, and that is where it falls flat on its face; there is just too little documentation to guide you through the complex structure of the menu system and options.
