  SS-Brigadeführer Fritz Witt
Fritz Witt was born in Hohenlimburg Germany, on 27 May 1908.
On 1 October 1939 Witt was given command of the I.Bataillon of the Deutschland Standarte, and went on to win the Knight's Cross on 4 September 1940 for his actions in France.
Fritz Witt is buried in Champigny - St. Andre De L'Eure in France.

Fritz Witt was born on 27 May 1908 in Hohenlimburg, a suburb of the city of Hagen.
Witt's battalion took part in the fighting for the town of Perekop, and the later advance across the Perekop Isthmus and the assaults on the Soviet defensive positions near the Tarter Ditch.
Witt's panzergrenadier regiment was stationed in the outskirts of Kharkov, and in early February saw heavy fighting against the forces of the Soviet Mobile Group Popov.

The 12th, popularly known as the "baby" division on account of the average age of its men, had a close relationship with the LSSAH, in that many of its senior commanders had blooded themselves in the ranks of the LSSAH.
Meyer, soon to become the youngest general in the German armed forces, was to take command of the division after Witt had been killed during an aerial attack in June 1944.
The campaign in Normandy was to see the men of the newly-formed I. SS Panzer Corps continue as they had done before, at times stretching the boundaries of the impossible in their quest to stem the tide of the Allied advance.

Major General Fritz De Witt, the military commander of the Halle area, had decided to defend at all cost, which was evident when he directed all Saale River bridges to be blown.
The unconditional surrender terms outlined by General Allen and Colonel Kelleher were not accepted by General De Witt because as he stated: "I am afraid of what they might do to my family." However it was agreed that all armed personnel would withdraw to the southern third of the city and resume fighting.
The city yielded 2,640-prisoners including General Fritz De Witt, who prior to capture retired to one of the city hospitals to rest his nerves and nurse his stomach ulcers.

Many of the lower level control and command positions within the HJ SS Panzer Grenadier Division were given to HJ members who had received exceptionally high marks in leadership and military training skills during their days in the HJ before and right after the start of the war.
The first divisional commander was SS Oberführer Fritz Witt, who, when he received this command, was quite young to command a division at only 34 years of age.
It is interesting to note that during their "shake down" training period in Beverloo, Belgium, many of the regularly expected training rules and regulations were tossed aside for the new SS troopers.

KG Witt was comprised of an infantry battalion, two light machine gun platoons, a heavy machine gun platoon, three anti-tank platoons, two engineer platoons, a light field howitzer troop and an 88mm Flak platoon.
For Witt, the victory was overshadowed by the death of his brother in the battle.
