Fritz-chip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fritz chip then encrypts the data with a machine-specific RSA key and returns the data to the CPU.
It was named after former United States Senator Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, who sponsored several pieces of legislation aimed at protecting the interests of intellectual property holders in the digital age, including one (the CBDTPA) that might mandate the inclusion of such a chip in every computer.
Fritz, in combination with "specialized software", could make it possible for programs to encrypt their data and hide the access keys before storing the data to some storage, like a hard disk, floppy or CD-ROM.

 [e-lang] Logical fallacy in Palladium?
Every time a new Fritz chip is made, when the key pair is generated, the private key goes onto the chip and the public key goes into their database.
Every time a new Fritz chip is made, the private key goes onto the chip, the public key is signed using Intel's master private key to yield a certificate, and the certificate also goes onto the chip.
Now, suppose that Intel has manufactured Fritz chips to go with their processor, and Bill Gates is sitting at home and would like to download a Disney movie to show on his Palladium-enabled version of Windows.

Regional lockout is the programming practice, code, chip, or physical barrier used to prevent the playing of media designed for a device from the country where it is marketed on the version of the same device marketed in another country.
It originated in the video game industry, and, with the advent of DVD, it was adopted by the motion picture industry.

Technology advancement could affect computer use
Fritz chips have been available in IBM Thinkpads since last May. Palladium, the operating system security layer, has not yet been released.
It is not possible to add a Fritz chip to a system that has already been purchased.
The core of the TCPA system is the Fritz chip.

The 'fritz' chip and 'Trusted Computing"
I don't know how many of you read this link http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html, (about the upcoming 'fritz' chip and Trusted Computing) although perhaps most of you already know about it, it is a highly interesting article...
Because of this 'fritz' chip, assurredly to become a 'big brother' tool in ways to rival our worst nightmare, it seems inevitable Intranets and Extranets will expand even more than they already are.
I'm not trying to add fuel to the long-burning fire on this forum (guess who's), but a thread about the possible ways around this 'fritz' chip could be interesting.

TCPA Trusted Computing Platform Alliance or Microsoft Palladium
The Fritz chip will maintain a table of all licensed hardware/software that has been approved and certified by their respective vendors.
Once the machine has reached the "operative state" the Fritz chip can certify to third parties that your machine is "suitable" to use their products and running an authorized application program.
The answer is no! The "Fritz Chip" is soldered to your motherboard and will determine what Operating System you must run, what hardware you must use, and what applications you can access.

MacSlash Apple And Digital Rights Management
Basically the Fritz chip verifies that the hardware/software combo is "approved" before Palladium will allow you to unlock media secured with the corresponding DRM spec.
The current plans for Palladium-based DRM call for two things that work in concert: the so-called Fritz chip, controlled by Intel, and the Palladium software, a Microsoft-built extension that will be built into the next version of Windows.
Fritz is such a point of parochial pride that the state bank used to run ads that ran "Because they don't have Fritz in Sydney..." somehow implying that Adelaide's lucky Fritz munching kids were better off.

 Research
In order to clarify a lot of misunderstanding about the chip, we are making available some helpful white papers and open source device drivers for Linux, so that interested people can test and use the chip in an open environment.
This white paper describes the goals of the TCPA chip, and shows how it can be used to protect a user's authentication keys and sensitive data against remote attacks.
We have the chip running under Linux, and have studied it extensively.

The basic idea is that the Fritz chip will constantly check the machine state, and the "authorizations" for the OS and each application on the machine.
At the heart of TCPA is a new chip added to motherboards, which have been affectionately dubbed "Fritz chips" after the good Senator.
But rumors that the sample Hammer chips that have shipped to motherboard makers are all locked at a measly 800MHz have folks wondering how fast the Opteron will run when it debuts.

I think i'm not gona buy another board until i make sure that the Fritz chip is not on it.

It is named after former United States Senator Ernest “Fritz” Hollings, who sponsored several pieces of legislation aimed at protecting the interests of intellectual property-holders in the digital age, including one that might mandate the inclusion of such a chip in every computer.
It is because of this dilemma: Any Fritz chip had to either allow universal computers or ban them.
The “Fritz Chip” is one of such technology.

TechIMO Forums - Palladium - how does it work?
A quick synopsis is that the fritz chip will intercept the data before it is processed by the processor.
The software must be digitally signed and unaltered to pass through the fritz chip, hence why the software can restrict what you play.
The software either says yes or no. If you alter the software to trick it, it becomes not digitally signed, and thus will not pass through the fritz chip to be processed.

The fritz chip could simply be emulated between the PC -- Internet, just make a device the emulates TCPA servers on your LAN Gateway, That doesnt send a single byte to TCP-A. G4, Sparc, Alpha, X-Bitch ;), Playstation III (It should be out by then).
November 4th, 2002, 10:22 AM I just dont want to upgrade because of the fact that hardware will start shipping with Fritz Inside and it would be pointless to upgrade to a new Intel because it would be quickly obselete because the new Fritz hardware will be the new stuff and i dont want it.
Lets not forget that Linux may be able to run on a Fritz system, and will only require some special software.

Phlogiston Blue - The Palladium Project
It's called the Fritz chip in honour of Senator Fritz Hollings of South Carolina who has been tireless in his efforts to get laws passed restricting the use of computers.
It consists (in the first instance) of a special chip - dubbed the 'Fritz chip' which takes control of your computer on boot up and makes sure you only have things it thinks you should have in your computer.
Needless to say, Fritz checks Palladium before it fires it up to make sure it hasn't been altered.
