  Fritz the Cat at AllExperts
Fritz the Cat was one of the first characters Crumb created, and the first to see print a professional publication.
Fritz's printed death, however, did not stop further films from being produced as Crumb had intended, and a sequel was produced and eventually released in 1974, entitled The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat.
Fritz is a trouble-making, anti-establishment, college-age figure whose adventures consisted of having sex with as many anthropomorphic female animals as possible, while staying one step ahead of the law.

I first saw ’Fritz the Cat’ during a midnight screening in college and, while I knew full well what to expect, I was still unprepared for the jarring juxtaposition between the cute animation style and the very adult and dark subject matter.
Fritz the cat is a student at NYU who is blissfully unaware of the conditions of those who aren’t part of the privileged class of cats and dogs.
MGM Home Entertainment is bringing us ’Fritz the Cat’ in anamorphic widescreen on this DVD, in a transfer that is framed at an aspect ratio of 1.85:1.

Fritz the Cat (1972)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Bakshi situates Fritz right in the middle of this social and cultural upheaval, presenting the character as a restless college student at NYU who decides to "bug out" and experience everything America has to offer him, which consists primarily of experimenting with sex, drugs, and revolution.
Although aimed primarily at those who experienced "the '60s" in all its raw glory, Fritz the Cat is essentially a parody of counterculture values, exposing at best hypocrisy, and at worst the danger of radical hippies and anarchic revolutionaries.
The animation in Fritz the Cat, the product of some 50 artists (including Jim Davis, who would go on to considerable fame and fortune as the creator of another cartoon cat, Garfield) is rough and tumble, but completely appropriate to the film's raw aesthetic and rawer look at politics and power.

Fritz the Cat operates on one of two levels: on one, it is the world’s first X-rated animated film.
Fritz is a student at NYU whose hedonistic escapades are as frequent as his rants on society’s faults (there are many, incidentally).
Fritz’s impulsive and, perhaps, inevitable abandon of his education leads to his involvement in a Harlem bar fight and ultimately to a cross-country journey, each for the benefit of self-exploration; neither yields any altruistic find.

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Fritz the Cat
Exactly when Fritz the Cat first appeared depends on what is meant by the word "appeared".
Fritz, who had been honed and shaped by years of comics stories done mainly for Crumb's personal expression, was the subject of the first two-pager Crumb sold to that outlet, which appeared in the 22nd issue (January, 1965).
When the sequel, The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, was released in 1975, neither Bakshi nor Crumb was involved.

This is the story of a misunderstood little bundle of joy we call Fritz, but she has often been referred to under a number of monickers such as "she devil", "el Gato de Muerte", "Evil One", "Hell's Kitten", "Satan's Spawn", and many more.
After passing up all of the good cats we came across poor little Fritzie and just knew that it was up to us to make room for her.
Every once in a while, though, Fritz can be a nice little cat, but she can be a bit on the moody side too.

Monsters At Play: Fritz The Cat Review
Fritz the Cat was the creation of Robert Crumb, icon of underground artists during the 1960s.
From there, Fritz goes on a series of misadventures, running from the cops (who are represented as pigs in Bakshi's anthropomorphic universe), burning his college dorm, winding up stoned in Harlem with the crows (the politically incorrect depiction of fls), starting a riot, and ultimately meeting up with the "real" revolution with tragic consequences.
Although it's use of racial stereotypes is improper in today's society (and rightly so), Fritz is still a viably historical landmark movie, and should be required viewing not only for film buffs, but anyone who studies the history of the Sixties.

Fritz the Cat DVD - Rabbit Valley - Furry and Anthropomorphic Comics
Based on a legendary character created by underground comic book artist/writer R. Crumb, Fritz the Cat is a brilliant commentary on the 60's life and a "snarling satire that stubbornly refuses to curl up in anyone's lap.
It's the age of awakening and Fritz, one way cool cat and NYU student, loves to embrace every experimental experience that crosses his path.
But when Fritz joins a group of radically aggressive hippies, he finds himself holding the dynamite that will detonate the ultimate 60s statement, one that could cost him his life.

Crumb detested the film: he drew Fritz as a decadent Hollywood star, who was exploited by caricatures of Bakshi and producer Steve Krantz--and murdered by a bitter ex-girlfriend.
Fritz is an independent free spirit, someone who hates authority and basically does whatever he wants to do when he wants to do it.
Fritz the Cat is not only a classic for bringing Ralph Bakshi into the Hollywood fray, but it also does some thing few American animated films accomplish: it presents a time in America and the founding ideologies and feelings of that period.

MichaelBarrier.com -- Funnyworld Revisited: The Filming of Fritz the Cat, Part One
Fritz the Cat was notorious as the first X-rated cartoon, a radical break with the prevailing blandness of feature animation in the early seventies.
Re-reading the article for the first time in many years, I was struck by the extent to which my analysis in the first section in particular could still be applied to today's animation industry.
As Bakshi says at one point in "The Filming of Fritz the Cat," "sometimes my ego is unreal," and I think that ego drove him into the artistic wilderness.

Heavy Traffic (1973) was Bakshi's controversial follow-up to Fritz and was based on the directors early life and showed the problems of growing up socially and economically deprived, as well as in a racist environment.

Since FRITZ THE CAT, Fritz has degenerated to the point where his main concerns are collecting a welfare check and constructing overblown sexual scenarios in his head.
From incest to political satire to space and religion, his adventures run the gamut of scathing social commentary by Bakshi, often using violence, sex, and debauchery to illustrate Fritz's demise as not only a citizen but as a human being with little interest in life as he knows it.
