From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah was the second Nirvana album to be released following the apparent suicide of singer/ guitarist Kurt Cobain in April 1994.
The fact is, for people who loved Cobain, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah (the title comes from the name of the river that cuts through Aberdeen, Washington, the hometown of Cobain and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic) is going to be a hard album to get a handle on.
From the Muddy Banks reminds us that if Cobain was slowly slipping into an abyss from which no one could save him, he was also clinging to a buzzing current of feeling -- a current that may have been his lifeline for longer than anyone should dare to guess.

From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah by Nirvana CD
The electric smashes and thrashes compiled on FROM THE MUDDY BANKS OF THE WISHKAH were originally intended as half of a double album; the other half would have been the acoustic show released as MTV UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK.
Contrary to what the title may seem to imply, though, this is not one concert recorded at the "muddy banks of the Wishkah," that is just a name they came up with after a river in Aberdeen.
Muddy banks is a must get and so are the other Nirvana albums.

Kurt Cobain's former bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl clearly had an agenda in compiling From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, the second of what will no doubt be a long line of posthumous Nirvana albums.
Wishkah offers 16 songs spanning the band's career, all delivered in the loudest, most frenzied, and sometimes the sloppiest versions imaginable.
But while it should be applauded, Wishkah isn't the great lost Nirvana album--there are no unheard gems to add to the catalog--and in the end, it isn't nearly as essential as any of the band's studio albums--or even the downbeat but revelatory Unplugged.

He and Grohl have chosen so carefully that From the Muddy Banks, unlike a lot of live albums, works as a whole; there isn't one track that sounds as if it were there just for filler, or just for kicks, or because it has an especially flashy guitar solo.
As far as we can tell from From the Muddy Banks, Nirvana were an astonishing live band: many of the songs here are more blistering, more rough-edged, than their studio counterparts.
The big danger in scrutinizing a posthumous release like From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah is that we're all tempted to play junior psychoanalyst, looking for clues about what caused Cobain so much suffering.

Nirvana ; From the Banks of the Muddy Wishkah
Two and half years after Nirvana ceased to be, fans finally get to experience the band as what they really were: three driven men with a handful of power chords, twisted lyrics, disturbing distortion and an unbridled energy that garnered them millions of fans worldwide.
From the Muddy Banks is plainly not the greatest live album ever compiled but it's a necessity to own, for the sake of experiencing to some degree the commanding sound and power of Nirvana's live performances that not enough people had the opportunity to witness.

The fact is, Nirvana was not only a great punk band, it was a great rock ‘n’ roll band and Kurt Cobain was not only a great and powerful lyricist, but an incredible pop-tune smith who understood the genius in simplicity and the raw power that characterizes rock.
Cobain’s lyrics continue to be muddy, buried beneath the speed and sheer noise of the music, yet, no matter how he rips the vocal lines apart and turns them over on themselves, the basic pop melody always seeps through.
From the Muddy Banks of The Wishkah tries to cut through all of the lionization and crap that might tarnish the point of it all: the music.

Compiled and sequenced by the band's surviving members, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah is a proud reclamation of the fury, raw power and incredible songwriting that were all but buried under the crush of analysis that followed Cobain's untimely death.
It was not Cobain the artist but Cobain the young man who collapsed under the weight of stardom and his coronation as the voice of a generation, the savior of rock & roll.
Still, when listening to the inspired performances on Muddy Banks, one can hardly believe that, by the end of his life, Cobain felt like a fraud, as though he was punching a clock each time he walked onstage.
