  Screen material
Passive stereo in rear-projected systems has been difficult in the past because standard rear-projection screens do not preserve polarization; after evaluating numerous screen materials, we have identified one that produces very little stereo crosstalk (a.k.a.
We obtained a number of different screen material samples from two manufacturers (Stewart Filmscreen and Da-Lite), and tested them with polarizing filters to determine how bright images would appear and how visible the stereo crosstalk would be.
The tests were performed using a 35mm slide projector as directional light source 1 meter from the screen sample; a cropping slide was used to limit the illumination to a 2" x 3" area of each sample.

This method has been called divided screen or split screen stereo in various documents, because the frame buffer is divided into 2 parts, one for each eye.
Stereo applications render the left-eye right-eye view is rendered into the bottom half of the frame buffer using lines 532-1023 (on all systems except O2, which uses lines 512-1003).
Stereo applications render the left-eye and right-eye views to the same pixel locations in the screen or window, but select either the left buffer or right buffer when rendering views for the left or right eye, respectively.

 How Stereo Display Works
While the left eye view of the screen is being displayed, the right eye on the goggles is darkened, and while the right eye view of the screen is being displayed, the left eye on the goggles is darkened.
In divided screen stereo, the two buffers are used instead as left and right buffers.
Because stereo mode requires the computer to render an image twice (once for each eye), divided screen stereo allows the computer to only render half of the screen twice.

 Stereo Viewing
With your head level and about 2.5 feet from the screen, hold up a finger, with its tip about 6 inches in front of your face, and centered between the stereo pair on the screen.
Your finger should still appear single, but blurred.
You will notice below your line of sight that the two views are blurred, but superimposed on each other, because your eyes are looking more or less parallel to each other to the distant object.

 Stereo Macro-images on screen
At a distance you find comfortable to view the screen, and whilst looking at the screen, raise your thumb in front of the two images and about 7-8" from your face and you'll notice that there are now two thumbs, although blurred.
Be constantly aware that the head must be square onto the screen, in the mid position between the two images, and that you'll need to 'tweak' the 'ear to ear' levels to enjoy comfortable viewing with the minimum of fatigue and best stereo effects.
Effectively, the eyes are doing something which is in actual fact unnatural, that is focussing on the screen but crossing together to as if focussing on a plane somewhere between the screen and your eyes.

It is also useful to be able to run the application in stereo mode or mono mode, the convention is to run in mono unless the command line switch "-s" is supplied.
The Toe-in method while giving workable stereo pairs is not correct, it also introduces vertical parallax which is most noticeable for objects in the outer field of view.
Updated in May 2002: sample code to deal with passive stereo, that is, drawing the left eye to the left half of a dual display OpenGL card and the right eye to the right half.

It is not "reality" in the sense of what you encounter in your daily life, but rather is what you would encounter in your field of view if you were to create a solid model of the surfaces, vectors, and volumes representing various aspects of the data set you wish to analyze.
Sometimes pairs are rendered with the left eye a view on the right and vice versa; the viewer then crosses her eyes to focus the proper image on the proper eye.
The screen alternately displays the left eyes and view using, say, the even-numbered lines of pixels for the left-eye view, and the odd numbered lines of pixels for the right-eye view.

JagVR stereo seperation - AtariAge Forums
Since Virtuality arcade kits have proper stereo seperation (ie objects in the distance are drawn closer together on the two screens than objects closer to you, to make your eyes think they really are further away) it seems unlikely that the JagVR would be flat and have no depth to it.
Jaysmith may be one to ask since he has the working headsets, but as far as I know, the Missle Command VR he has is the only known game to work with the headset and it may or may not have used the projectors if the headset has them.
