Frombork (German: Frauenburg) is a town in northern Poland, on the Vistula Lagoon (German: Frisches Haff) in Warmia-Masuria Voivodship, with a population of 2,602 in 2005.
Frombork was meticulously reconstructed after its destruction in World War II and is a major tourist attraction.
From the 1466 Second Peace of Toruń, Frombork was an important city of the Bishopric of Warmia.

Frombork castle and cathedral were built by the Teutonic knights in the 14th century.
In 1466, Frombork became a part of Poland and during the years 1512-1516 and 1522-1543 the castle was the workplace of the astronomer Nicholas Copernicus.
Frombork castle consists of only an enclosing wall, a few simple buildings and the above Gothic tower, originally constructed during the second half of the 14th century.

The Nicolaus Copernicus Museum was established in Frombork in 1984.
The Museum preserves eighteenth and nineteenth century astronomical instruments and copies of devices used by Kopernik himself, all medals ever made in honour of Kopernik, apothecary ampoules, bottles, jars, mortars and wooden containers, some of which date from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century.
Visitors can also see archeological finds from the area of Frombork and the Cathedral Hill, decorative arts ranging in date from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, as well as contemporary painting, prints, sculpture and textiles.

As soon as he reached this town, he asked and obtained permission to return to Italy to complete his studies in Padua (with Guarico and Fracastoro) and in Ferrara (the town of his teacher Novara, with Bianchini), where in 1503 received his doctoral degree in canon law.
Some time before his return to Warmia, he had received a position at the Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross in Wroclaw, Silesia, which he resigned a few years prior to his death, when he progressively became ill.
Copernicus was still completing his work (even if he was not convinced to publish it), when in 1539 Georg Joachim Rheticus, a great mathematician at Wittenberg, directly arrived in Frombork.

Through his uncle, Lukas Watzenrode (1447-1512), who later became the bishop of Varmia (Ermland), was elected a canon of the cathedral chapter of Frombork (Frauenburg).
After briefly returning to Frombork, Copernicus studied medicine at the University of Padua during years 1501-1503, where received a license to practice medicine.
He acted as medical advisor and secretary to his uncle at Heilsberg, and was later heavily involved with the administrative tasks in the diocese of Frombork.

FROMBORK, Poland, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A computer-generated reconstruction of a skull and partial remains discovered in Frombork, Poland, appears to resemble portraits of Nicolaus Copernicus.
The remains, found in Frombork Cathedral, had been examined by specialists at the central crime laboratory in Warsaw.
The examination determined the skull was of a man who had died at age 60 to 70, reported the BBC Friday.
