Front Line Assembly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Front Line Assembly (also known by the acronym FLA) is a Canadian Elektro/Electro-Industrial band formed in 1986 by Bill Leeb and Michael Balch after Leeb left Skinny Puppy.
Front Line Assembly made somewhat of a return to their former sound with the album Implode (1999), followed by Epitaph (2001).
Chris Petersen left Front Line Assembly in 2002, and through most of that year it was rumored that the band had essentially broken up.

FLA enraged many of their fans in 1994 when they began to experiment with their established electronic-only sound.
Front Line stepped to the firing line again in 1995 with Hard Wired, which reflected both a return to form and a continued embracing of the guitar.

FLA closes with two great tracks, "torched" and "machine slave," which feature evident PRODIGY and NINE INCH NAILS samples and a special surprise appears in the form of "stalker," which is simply beautiful in its efforts to portray its namesake.
FLA quickly returned to the studio and the resulant product of their efforts may be their finest masterpiece to date.

So, after being mercilessly pummelled by Flying Saucer Attack, next out of the Jiffy Bag was this compilation from Vancouver-based industrial terrorists Front Line Assembly, focusing on their work between 1989 and 1993, with a few remixes and b-sides thrown in to tempt the completist.
Front Line Assembly were, in their former incarnation Skinny Puppy, heavily influenced by the first generation electro acts such as Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, who in turn had learned the whole game from the pioneering efforts of the mighty Kraftwerk, where inevitably any investigation into the roots of machine-based music must inevitably end up.
In turn Front Line Assembly have sired or inspired bands such as Ministry, Revolting Cocks and Fear Factory (whose "Remanufacture" album sounds not unlike "New Lands", come to think of it, in concept if not in execution).

Both Leeb and Fulber appear to be bored with the project and unable to muster up the energy to mutate Front Line Assembly into something new; they now have to be careful not to become the antithesis of everything they have built.

 Mindphaser 3.0
The FLA sound fitted in snugly with the burgeoning European EBM scene as well as the growth of the American Industrial scene, with it’s combination of heavy beats, complex layered melodies and harsh distorted vocals.
At this time FLA stood alone in the field of Industrial music, neither really heading towards the dance floors like their European counterparts or disappearing into the realms of experimentation that many bands were falling into.
Once again re-united as FLA, Bill And Rhys released a killer single ‘Maniacal’ (2003) as a precursor to the new album ‘Civilization’ (2004) and the sighs of relief amongst FLA fans were audible across the globe.

When rumours about the next Front Line Assembly album began to surface last summer, there was considerable debate amongst fans of the band about whether those rumours did in fact reflect what was going to be released, or whether they were deliberate misinformation on the part of a mischievous Bill Leeb.
All of these combined to make changes to the FLA sound - Rhys had taken his fondness for heavy metal with him to Fear Factory, and the ever-opportunistic Leeb didn't miss the opportunity to skew the FLA sound towards the then-flavour-of-the-week, electronica.
It's probably only for the already-indoctrinated though, FLA neophytes would be better off checking out some older stuff first, and those who never liked FLA very much to start with won't find anything to change their mind here.

Being a fan of Front Line Assembly is akin to following your hometown baseball team for 15 or 20 years.
Case in point: FLA's Caustic Grip and Tactical Neural Implant were two great albums within the pantheon of industrial dance music, despite their failure to really revolutionize the aggro-electronic scene.
Since that heyday, it becomes more apparent with each album that FLA has killed their golden goose; whether they're phoning it in or just out of compelling ideas, the last ten years of material just doesn't have that old skool, minty fresh magic.

Skinny Puppy's brand of cacophonous, abstracted electronic industrial music forms the basis around which Front Line Assembly was built, but it's really Front 242, the "electronic body music" pioneers, who seem to have inspired Lieb and FLA the most.
What I loved about FLA was that it focused less on the dance-based aspect of EBM that Front 242 was known for, incorporating more of the cinematic flourish Skinny Puppy exhibited in some of their best moments.
FLA was always the harder, more industrial side of their collaboration.
