 GameSpy: Front Mission 4 Review
Front Mission 4 is the second game in the series to be released Stateside, and hardcore fans will perhaps appreciate that it doesn't offer too much of a departure from its antecedent.
During the debriefing sections that bookend each mission, you're able to "buy" new abilities for your pilots, which in turn boost their capabilities in battle.
But since the upcoming Front Mission Online promises to make good on the series' potential for this kind of thing, perhaps this version is better off without what, in all likelihood, would have felt half-assed in comparison.

Front Mission 4 really is at the pinnacle of the console turn-based strategy genre, and is a great opportunity to get your feet wet if you’ve been uncomfortable stepping away from the likes of football and racing games.
On the darker side, while Front Mission 4 has some very attractive cut scenes, in which wanzers and mobile weapons rush across the landscape, spewing shells and hurling explosive firepower at one another, much of the tale is told in the manner of traditional console RPGs.
Sometimes, between missions, you’ll navigate menus that take you to houses, bars or smugglers’ dens, and have four- or five-line conversations with everyone there.

Though definitely not as popular as Final Fantasy, Square’s Front Mission series has received its fair share of attention too, and rightly so; it’s the company’s primary strategy franchise with tons of customization options, tough combat mechs, and an interesting storyline all woven together to avoid creating “just some more robot games”.

Unless you're a diehard strategy role-playing gamer, Front Mission 4 is so text-heavy and trail and error oriented that you'll spend up to an hour preparing for a battle and reading text and spend over an hour during the battle itself, just to die because you knew nothing about the battle in advance.
Front Mission 4 is not a bad game, but it's certainly not for everyone.
The pre-battle preparations are unmatched in Front Mission 4, and with the addition of more mech units (known as Wanzers) as you progress through the game, it can take upwards of one hour to get all of your units tweaked the way you want them.
