In the Western world, the front crawl was first seen in a competition held in 1844 in London, where it was swum by South American Indians, who easily defeated the British breaststroke swimmers.
This style is slower than the regular front crawl and is rarely used competitively: however, it is often used for training purposes even by professional swimmers, as it increases the body's awareness of being streamlined in the water.
Normally, the face is in the water during front crawl with eyes looking at the lower part of the wall in front of the pool, with the waterline between the brow line and the hairline.

 Front Crawl Stroke
The front crawl, sometimes called the freestyle, is the fastest stroke.
It results from three movements: (1) the high recovery of one arm, (2) the downsweep of the other arm, and (3) the sideways force of the kicks as the legs roll with the rest of the body.
Body roll is important for almost all aspects of the front crawl.

An Alternative Fluid Dynamic Explanation for Propulsion in Front Crawl Swimming
Calculation of propulsion in front crawl swimming relies on the quasi-steady assumption that the fluid dynamic behaviour of a hand model in a flow channel (constant velocity and orientation) is similar to that of a hand of a real swimmer swimming the front crawl.
Kinematic analysis of the trajectory of the hand during the swimming stroke suggests that the hand movements are in fact far from steady, both in terms of velocity and particularly in terms of the direction of movement (Berger et al., 1997; Schleihauf et al., 1983), while rotations of the arm segments are a prominent feature.
Therefore, a re-evaluation of the hydromechanic propulsion mechanisms operative during the front crawl swimming is appropriate.
