Topic: Front derailleur

  Derailleur-Front
The front derailleur is the mechanism that shifts your chain from chainring to chainring.
Front derailleurs typically malfunction because (A) the derailleur body is not positioned properly, (B) the derailleur limit screws are not adjusted correctly, (C) the mechanism is dirty or (D) the cable is damaged or improperly tensioned.
The derailleur "cage" (the long, curved section of the derailleur that the chain passes through) should be approximately 2mm above the teeth of the chainring (when viewed from the side).

 derailleur
If your derailleur was recently installed or if you know that you took a direct impact to your front derailleur, then the first thing you should check is the air gap between the big chainring and the bottom of the front derailleur.
Put the chain on the front small chainring and on the smallest rear cog.  Rotate your pedals and shift your front derailleur to the large chainring watching that the chain should jump up onto the large chainring without overshooting it.  If the chain is overshooting the large chainring, then
, shift the front derailleur to the small chainring and the rear derailleur to the largest cog.  Stand behind the bike and eyeball the alignment.  The derailleur cogs should be in line with the smallest cog.  If not, adjust the L screw so that it is in line.

The basic adjustments for the front derailleur are the height, rotation, limit screws and inner wire tension (index setting).
The front derailleur cage should be approximately parallel to the chain.
Generally, the outer cage of the front derailleur should be aligned to the chain.

How to Adjust a Front Derailleur
Use a 5mm Allen wrench and loosen the bolt holding the cable on the front derailleur.
Push the old cable out and then thread the new cable through the shifter, through the stays and down into the derailleur It is recommended that if you are going through the effort to replace the cable you should replace the housing at the same time.
The chain should have approximately 1mm clearance between the chain and the inside plate of the derailleur Back out the inside screw on top of the derailleur to move the unit inward, towards bottom bracket.

The front derailleur is the metal "cage" attached or clamped to your seat post that moves your chain from one chain ring to another.
If your front derailleur is properly adjusted, the chain will shift quickly and easily from one ring to the next and without overshooting or jumping off the chain set.
The "cage", the curved section of the derailleur that the chain passes through, should be approximately 2mm above the teeth of the chain ring.

 Front Derailleur Overview - 1-800-Bike-Pro / Buyer's Guide
The front derailleur's job is to nudge the chain from one of the front chainrings to another, as smoothly as possible.
It merely used the front derailleur cage to shove the chain laterally in a straight line to and from the chainrings.
If the "capacity" of the front derailleur was 14 teeth, the difference between the largest and smallest chainring sizes must be 14 teeth or less.

 Replacing the Front Derailleur
Replacing the front derailleur is one of those jobs that seems impossibly complicated.
Set the limit screws so the inner wall of the derailleur cage is 2 mm (just less than 1/8 inch) away from the chain while in the small chainring and the biggest biggest cassette cog, and the outer wall is 2 mm from the chain while in big ring - smallest cog.
The derailleur cage (the long thin "box" that moves with the chain) should be exactly parallel to the chainwheel.

The good thing is that almost all triple derailleurs have enough travel to handle four chainrings as long as the crankset is in the proper position.
The basic problem is that derailleur cages are not designed to handle very large and very small chainrings at the same time.
Raising the derailleur to clear a large outer chainring means the back of the cage is also raised and when you try to run a small triple or quad the chain may drag on the bottom of the cage.

No matter how well I adjust the front derailleur (want the use of all 3 chainrings), I get a small amount of chain rub in the smallest 2 cogs when on the large chainring.
AFAIK, the only effect #cogs has on front shifting is where the front cage sits on the index detents, and you originally posted that you're running in friction mode.
I've set the low stop screw to a setting that limits the travel of the derailleur to where it is centered over the small chainring, and the high stop to where the inside cage arm will be centered over the large, if forced by hand.

Looking from the side and using your fingers to pull the cage outward, position the bottom edge of the derailleur cage 1 to 3 millimeters (road is lower and mountain higher) above the tips of the chainring teeth.
While hand-pedaling the cranks, turn the low-limit screw (usually the one farther from the frame, but the limit screw position varies on a lot of bikes--some have an H or an L next to the screws) clockwise until the chain won't drop into the small ring when you try to shift down.

Many people make the mistake of using the leverage tab as a cable pinch by running the cable UNDER the leverage tab - this changes the pulling leverage of the front shifter and makes it impossible to properly adjust the front derailleur.
