All Subaru front wheel drive and all wheel drive layouts are derived from the standard longitudinal front engine/rear drive transmission configuration, however the differential for the front wheels is between the bellhousing and the transmission.
Transversly mounted engine and front wheel drive was introduced with the 1949 Saab 92 and popularised by the Mini of 1959, there the transmission was built into the sump of the engine, and drive was transferred to it via a set of primary gears.
Front wheel drive was further advanced by the 1948 Citroën 2CV (a Porsche 911 boxer exactly reversed in layout).

Rear vs Front Wheel Drive in Winter
Front wheel drive is considered next best because the "weight" of the engine is over the wheels doing the steering.
Bob Erck ===================================================== In principle, four wheel drive is superior because power reaches all four wheels independently and the electronics allow each wheel to "recognize" the traction of the other three.
Rear wheel drive without added weight is considered to be the least effective.

Front Wheel Drive - Is it practical?
Front wheel drive means that you are going to use the front wheel to propel the bike as well as steer it.
One is to build a bike that looks like a SWB with the bottom bracket (BB) out in front connected to the main frame, but instead of routing the chain to the rear wheel it goes to the front wheel.
A far simpler way of building a FWD bike is to mount the bottom bracket in front of the front wheel but have it attached to the fork instead of to the frame.

And actually I think the penny f***hing had "front wheel drive" and the reason you don't put the jet on the front of rocket is obvious, as is the speedboat thing.

Falling Out of Love with Front-Wheel Drive
Rear-drive cars are renowned for their more "neutral" balance: Because the driving wheels are not being asked to also take on steering duties - and because the mass of the engine does not rest over the driving wheels - RWD cars generally respond more fluidly to steering inputs.
The Big Three's downsized FWD cars were embraced by consumers; the new-generation front-drivers offered markedly improved fuel economy to a public with fresh memories of gas rationing (another fuel "crisis" hit in 1979).
The typical FWD car was tidily proportioned yet offered reasonable interior space because the intrusion of a longitudinally mounted engine/bellhousing and central driveshaft tunnel could be eliminated from the passenger compartment.

Modern Racer - Driving Tips - Front-Wheel-Drive Oversteer
It is generally perceived that front-wheel-drive cars - that is, cars in which the front wheels do both, put power to the road and steer - are understeering wrecks that fly off the road if you go into a corner too quickly.
You will not be able to hold a long, continuous sideways drift around a sweeping corner with a front-wheel-drive car like you can with a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, and you cannot use engine power on a high-horsepower car to start a "powerslide" since the power acts on the front wheels.
The front wheels of the car will just try to pull the car straight again and you'll have to steer exactly where you want to go.

Why Front-Wheel Drive Sucks By Mickey Kaus
In a FWD car, the front tires do all the work – both steering and applying the power to the road – while the rears are largely along for the ride.
In a front-drive car, with the front wheels slipping, you slow down and keep turning the way you'd been turning to get around the corner in the first place -- a more natural maneuver, since you're pointing the car in the direction you want to go.
Everyone knew that front-wheel drive cars were the efficient, sophisticated wave of the future.
