 The Forgotten Frontier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Forgotten Frontier is a 1931 documentary film about the Frontier Nursing Service, nurses on horseback, who traveled the back roads of the Appalachian Mountains.
It was directed by Mary Marvin Breckinridge, and featured her cousin, Mary, who was a nurse-midwife and founded the Frontier Nursing Service.
The film has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Before Mary Breckinridge began the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS), childbirth was primitive in remote, rural areas.
Mary Breckinridge's first husband died prematurely and left her a widow in 1906 at only twenty-six years old.
Her father was minister to Russia under President Grover Cleveland from 1894-1897.
