Some PBS programming, such as the investigative series ``Frontline'' and American drama, wouldn't attract enough private funding to stay on the air, the executives said.
It's been more than a decade since PBS produced a program geared to fls, arguably the type of community underserved by commercial broadcasters that the public system was invented for, Ledbetter said.
PBS and Ledbetter agree that public broadcasting would be better served by a funding mechanism that insulates it from recurring political battles, either a trust fund or a dedicated revenue stream.

PBS, they say, is being forced to toe a more conservative line in its programming by the Republican-dominated agency that provides about $30 million in federal funds to the Alexandria-based service.

But the PBS program called "Frontline/World" that premieres Thursday night comes from a long tradition of foreign affairs reporting -- a tradition that is getting a makeover, admits series editor Stephen Talbot.
By co-producing the series, KQED is helping originate a news show, which it hasn't done much of in recent years.
The tagline for the new series is "Stories From a Small Planet." Each segment is introduced by a view of the world from outer space, which then zooms in on a map of the country in question.

The series is not going to cost any money to acquire beyond the $50 the 3-DVD set costs and from what I hear, it's an interesting and professionally produced view of a topic that many in your potential audience might be interested in watching.
A nationwide public access channel that draws the best citizen content from around the country and (this is the important bit) is edited into PBS programming.
Or at least take a few hours out of the week for this...I don't want to see Frontline, Sesame Street, Nova, or Newshour with Jim Lehrer taken off the air, but giving the Make magazine gadgeteers a half-hour a week to geek out about hacking stuff seems reasonable.

The PBS documentarian Ken Burns has been working for six years on “The War,” a soldier’s-eye view of World War II, and those who have seen parts of the 14-plus hours say they are replete with salty language appropriate to discussions of the horrors of war.
