Marcus Cornelius Fronto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His talents as an orator and rhetorician were greatly admired by his contemporaries, a number of whom formed themselves into a school called after him Frontoniani, whose avowed object it was to restore the ancient purity and simplicity of the Latin language in place of the exaggerations of the Greek sophistical school.
In that year, however, Angelo Mai discovered in the Ambrosian library at Milan a palimpsest manuscript (and, later, some additional sheets of it in the Vatican), on which had been originally written some of Fronto's letters to his imperial pupils and their replies.
The letters consist of correspondence with Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, in which the character of Fronto's pupils appears in a very favourable light, especially in the affection they both seem to have retained for their old master; and letters to friends, chiefly letters of recommendation.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2000.07.26
Fate granted Fronto a reprieve: the manuscript of his correspondence was erased and reused at Bobbio in the seventh century, covered with a copy of the Acts of the Council of Chalcedon.
Mai's prompt publication of the texts destroyed any reputation that Fronto might have had: tediously fawning and hypochondriacal, steeped in disappointment that his pupil Marcus disdained the glories of rhetoric in favor of Stoic philosophy, filled with archaizing language and pointless wordplay, Fronto's letters are not always a pleasure to read.
He is scrupulous in documenting, for instance, Fronto's use of tenses and moods and of various introductory and inferential particles; he lists all the passages where given words or constructions occur and discusses in detail such matters as the different uses of the future perfect or perfect subjunctive in Fronto.

Harvard University Press/Marcus Cornelius Fronto, Correspondence, II,
The correspondence of Fronto--a much admired orator and rhetorician who was befriended by the emperor Antoninus Pius and teacher of his adopted sons Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus--offers an invaluable picture of aristocratic life and literary culture in the 2nd century.
His letters reveal Fronto's strong stylistic views and dislike of Stoicism as well as his family joys and sorrows.
They portray the successes and trials of a prominent figure in the palace, literary salons, the Senate, and lawcourts, and they give a fascinating record of the relationship between the foremost teacher of his time and his illustrious student Marcus Aurelius, his chief correspondent.

Roman Emperors - DIR Lucius Verus
Accurate, or imaginative, multiple authors, or single author, there is little doubt that it is "propaganda directed to a popular audience." [[1]] The popular propaganda issue is clearly visible in both SH Verus and SH Marcus where the personal life style and personality traits of Lucius Verus pervade evaluations of his accomplishments as emperor.
The letters of Marcus Cornelius Fronto, teacher to Marcus and Lucius, are far gentler in their portrayal of Lucius' personality and grand life style than are the historical accounts of the biographies included in the Historia Augusta.
[[23]] Fronto, always as kind as possible in interpreting the behavior of Lucius, compares the emperor's close relationship with actors to that of Trajan, as a politically wise, inclusive practice because of the popular appeal of theater to the Roman people.
