Frosted Flakes - 1/3 Less Sugar Review - Mr Breakfast
Frosted Flakes and, to a slightly lesser degree, Froot Loops could be called breakfast cereal classics — cereals who’s flavors are forever familiar to anyone who grew up with them.
Almost to be expected, the cereal that was once called "Sugar Frosted Flakes", has an altered taste when much of the sugar is removed.
It’s a testament to the original Frosted Flakes that you might be inclined to add a Tablespoon of sugar to make the new cereal taste better.

Sugar Frosted Flakes - Food Facts & Trivia
In 1952, the Kellogg Company held a contest to see who would represent their new cereal called 'Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes of Corn.' The contestants in the contest were Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, Newt the Gnu and Tony the Tiger.
It was a close race with Katy and Tony sharing the front of the box at first.
Eventually Kellogg declared Tony the clear winner and in 1953 became the sole spokesperson for Kellogg’s Sugar Frosted Flakes cereal.

Worldandnation: Flakes less frosted, not more healthful
The reduced-sugar versions of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and Froot Loops; General Mills' Cocoa Puffs and Trix; and Post's Fruity Pebbles all have the same number of calories per serving.
To preserve taste and texture, sugar is replaced with other carbs that have the same calories as sugar and are no better for you.
To create sweetened cereals with cross-generational appeal, Kellogg's simply cut the sugar, and its price for reduced-sugar Frosted Flakes is the same as the original.

DaytonDailyNews: Dayton, Ohio, news and information
The Kellogg's national-brand Frosted Flakes fared well, but most panelists did not detect any quality difference between the national brand and store brands, and in fact, the overwhelming majority picked a store brand as their favorite.
Still, two Frosted Flakes aficionados on the panel correctly picked out which of the six samples was the Kellogg's — and both identified that cereal as their favorite.
Those who preferred the frosted flakes less sweet identified the Wal-Mart Malt-o-Meal as their favorite; that brand captured three first-place votes, as did the frosted flakes from Aldi (Millville), Kroger and Meijer.

Tony's purpose in life is to hawk Kellogg's Frosted Flakes (originally known as Sugar Frosted Flakes, back before sugar assumed its present position in the public consciousness as enemy of all things healthful).
He started as one of at least four spokestoons for Frosted Flakes, but Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant and Newt the Gnu fell by the wayside early on — in fact, the latter two didn't even make it onto the cereal box.
Over the years, the Frosted Flakes product has been spun off into Cocoa Frosted Flakes, Banana Frosted Flakes and a couple of other short-lived flavors, all with Tony as their spokestoon.

Tony the Tiger made his debut in 1952 as part of a plan for a series of animal illustrations appearing on boxes of Sugar Frosted Flakes.
Supposedly Kellogg's goal was to have a character for every letter of the alphabet, but only Tony and Katie made it onto the box.
Thanks to a catchy slogan ("I'm here to proudly state, Sugar Frosted Flakes are gr-r-reat!"), Tony grabbed the spotlight, and Katie, along with the others, quickly faded into advertising history.
