 SOA News
The nine joined 12,000 gathered at the gates of Ft. Benning in November 1999 to call for the closing of the notorious institution that is linked to human rights atrocities.
Immediately after the guilty verdict was rendered, six other human rights defenders, including three Catholic nuns, a retired social worker, and a homeless advocate, left the courthouse to plant crosses and place coffins at the School of the Americas.
The six entered Ft. Benning in defiance of a "bar order" banning them from the facility, and each risks six months in prison and a hefty fine like the nine found guilty today.

Fort Benning is south of Columbus, Georgia on U.S. highway 27.
Fort Benning covers 73,533 hectares (181,626 acres) of land with 93 % in west central Georgia and the remaining 7 % in east central Alabama.
In 1963, the 11th Air Assault Division was formed at Fort Benning to test the air assault concept that led to the airmobile concept of the First Cavalry Division.

For the sixth year in a row legislation is being introduced in both Houses of Congress to close the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) in Ft. Benning, Georgia.
In addition to contacting their local representatives, SOA opponents will again make what have become annual pilgrimages to Washington DC and Ft. Benning, Georgia, to vigil, rally, and, for some, engage in non-violent acts of civil disobedience.
Over two thousand people risked arrest at Ft. Benning last November, but none were charged as military officials were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of the crowd.

He worked in progressive field and office assignments in construction in that District, Europe Division, Savannah District and Europe District until he was selected as the Chief of the Construction Division in Europe in 1999.
On 1 October 2000, the Engineering and Construction Divisions were combined in the Europe District and he assumed the responsibilities as the Chief of that combined division until his move to his current assignment.

Established in Panama in 1946 as a hemispheric Cold War beachhead, the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA), which operates solely for the training of Latin American military officers, was moved to Ft. Benning in Columbus, GA in 1984.
The Rev. Charles Booker-Hirsch is pastor of Northside Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor.
He was one of 43 indicted in April for trespassing onto Ft. Benning during what he describes as a solemn nonviolent civil disobedience action last November.

 Introduction - Soil texture, land use intensity, and vegetation of
Benning is located in southeastern Georgia within the Fall Line Sandhills District of the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont physiographic provinces.
Our longterm objective is to evaluate the ecological effects of military training (Figure 1) and forest management for longleaf pine at Ft. Benning, to determine if there are thresholds beyond which upland ecosystems cannot sustain the combined effects of burning and military traffic disturbances.
We hypothesize that soil type (sandy vs. clayey) (Figure 2) influences nutrient cycling, species diversity, and vegetation dynamics, as well as the threshold for sustainability of land use disturbances.

Then went thru Ft. Lewis, WA in July 68, enroute to Korea, as a single replacement officer for the MI class that was sent there in response to the Pueblo capture.
Went to Ft. Devens, MA to be the G-2 or Dptsec, as they called it, and enjoyed New England for 15-months.
It was a great District, no roads in or out, so it was chopper or sampan, VNAF or any motor driven log we could commandeer (I did manage to get the CIB while in District.) Then 9 months as the Province S-2 Advisor in Soc Trang.

Europe District Surveyor John Miller (TOP) is pictured receiving assistance from two Albanian youth in setting up surveying equipment in Tirana, Albania.
In April and May, six Corps specialists from Europe District deployed to Albania to provide base camp support, conduct environmental baseline studies, and establish a TeleEngineering capability which allows real-time video consultations with technical experts throughout the Corps.
Engineers from the Corps’ Baltimore and Philadelphia Districts have also deployed to Albania, and a large number engineers from Corps Districts throughout the United States, are being processed through Ft. Benning, Georgia - ready to deploy on a moment’s notice.
