Lead by star forward George Yardley, the Fort Wayne Pistons were a popular franchise and appeared in the NBA Finals in 1954 and 1955, losing both times.
With their physical, intense style of play, the Pistons gained the nickname "Bad Boys." Coach Chuck Daly took the team to the NBA Finals three consecutive years (1988-90) and won NBA championships in 1989 and 1990 (and it is wildly debated in Detroit that the Pistons should have won in 1988).
Brown and The Pistons were a good team that eventually turned into a champion with the February 2004 acquisition of Rasheed Wallace from the Atlanta Hawks.

The Zollner Pistons were even stronger in the second season as they finished the regular season in first place with a record of 17-6.
Following the season the Pistons would be one of 4 teams, along with the Minneapolis Lakers, Rochester Royals and Indianapolis Jets to join the BAA as the first step of a merger between the 2 leagues was initiated.
The city of Fort Wayne would not see a return of professional basketball, although with the launching of the ABA in 1967 the state of Indian once again had a team to call their own in the Pacers.

Birch, a guard from Duquesne, played for the Original Celtics at the start of the 35/36 season and began playing for the Ft. Wayne Pistons in 1941.
When the BAA was formed in 1946 he became a coach of the Pittsburgh Ironmen and later became the coach of the Ft. Wayne Pistons.

At this point play was suspended as Detroit had qualified to play in the ASA World Tournament and it was agreed that the teams would meet in Fort Wayne at the start of the 1954 season and play the final and deciding game.
