It spreads across the river terrace on the left bank of the Tama River, facing the Tama hills on the opposite shore.
Today, the local economy is primarily service-oriented, with retail centers and department stores near the train stations, as well as the Tokyo Racecourse and the Tama-gawa speedboat race facility.
Fuchu is also home to Fuchu Prison, one of Japan's largest prisons, and to a major base of the Air Self-Defense Force.

Dateline: TOKYO, April 17 Lawmakers of the House of Councillors Committee on Judicial Affairs visited Tokyo's Fuchu Prison on Thursday to look into the prison's handling of official records of its inmates.
The authorities at the prison, on the outskirts of Tokyo, claim to have lost documents on nine inmates who died there between 1996 to 2000, prompting speculation that the loss was deliberate.
Fuchu Prison accounts for 93 of the 1,592 deaths in the last 10 years at prisons and detention centers nationwide.

June 2002: Eleven-year-old Yuutaro Tanaka homered and pitched solidly in relief as Musashi Fuchu rallied from a 4-0 first inning deficit to down Chofu 8-4 in the final stage of the All-Tokyo tournament and advance to the All-Japan tournament as the Tokyo runner-up.
Musashi Fuchu outscored five opponents 86-0 to win the annual tournament, which plays a similar role in Japan as county or interlock tournaments in North America.
By the close of the day, Musashi Fuchu had slammed twelve home runs, and eclipsed the previous All-Japan tournament single-game scoring record of 32 runs in their opening round win over the champions of the traditionally weaker Hokkaido district.
