  Ford Fuel Injected Engines
Injectors are rated to deliver a certain amount of fuel in a certain amount of time at a certain pressure.
If you want to install a fuel injection system on an older car that was not available with fuel injection you will need to keep in mind a few items.
Since most injection systems mount the fuel pump inside the gas tank this may pose a problem for some older cars that you can't modify the tank to accept one.

Fuel injection -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Fuel injection is a technology used in (Click link for more info and facts about internal combustion engine) internal combustion engines to mix the fuel with air prior to combustion.
Indirect fuel injection has been used in (An internal-combustion engine that burns heavy oil) diesel engines since the mid (The decade from 1920 to 1929) 1920s, almost from their introduction (due to the higher energy required for diesel to evaporate).
Fuel injection became widespread with the introduction of electronically controlled fuel injection systems in the (The decade from 1980 to 1989) 1980s and the gradual tightening of (The release of electrons from parent atoms) emissions and (Click link for more info and facts about fuel economy) fuel economy laws.

Fuel injection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fuel Injection is a method to precisely meter fuel into an internal combustion engine, where the fuel is then burned in air to produce heat.
Carburetors were the predominant method to meter fuel prior to the widespread use of fuel injection, however various injection schemes have existed since the earliest usage of the internal combustion engine.
Fuel injection systems such as Hilborn were occasionally used on modified American V8 engines in high performance automobiles of the 1960s, in drag racing, oval racing, and road racing.

Fuel pump - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Fuel has to be pumped from the fuel tank to the engine and delivered under low pressure to the carburetor or under high pressure to the fuel injection system.
Some fuel injected engines have two fuel pumps for this purpose: one low pressure/high volume supply pump in the tank and one high pressure/low volume pump on or near the engine.
It is common for the fuel pump relay to become oxidized and cease functioning; this is much more common than the actual fuel pump failing.

Fuel efficiency - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fuel efficiency relates the efficiency of conversion to kinetic energy from energy contained in a carrier fuel, specifically in a transportation vehicle, such as an automobile.
Fuel efficiency is normally expressed in terms of power per unit of engine displacement, also known as specific output.
All these previously-cited fuel economy values are for operation on petrol (gasoline.) New US light vehicles designated as flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) running on E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) will typically achieve from 5% to 15% less fuel economy in mpg on pure E85 than when operated on pure gasoline.

Digression on Diesel Combustion and Emissions   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The remainder of the fuel in the spray core is still too rich to burn, so combustion slows down and is controlled by the rate at which the air is entrained and a combustible mixture formed.
Fuels with a high cetane number will have short ignition delays and a small amount of premixed combustion since little time is available to prepare the fuel for combustion.
Having the liquid fuel injected into a separate chamber kept most of the fuel away from the piston rings and lessened the likelihood of fuel contamination of the lubricating oil and fouling of the piston rings.

(WO 01/83969) FUEL CONTROL SYSTEM INCLUDING ADAPTIVE INJECTED FUEL QUANTITY ESTIMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
A pressure sensor is provided for producing a pressure signal indicative of the pressure of fuel within the collection unit throughout a fuel injection event, and an engine position sensor is provided for producing an engine position signal indicative of a crank angle of the engine relative to a reference crank angle.
A control circuit includes means responsive to the pressure signal and a desired fueling value for producing an initial fueling command, and further includes a fuel quantity estimation block responsive to the pressure signal, the engine position signal and a final fueling command to produce a fuel quantity estimation value.
The final fueling command is computed by the control circuit as a function of the initial fueling command and the fuel quantity adjustment value to which the injector is responsive to supply fuel to the combustion chamber.

 The GMI Fuel Injected
Because injected propane vapor can require 4% to 15% of the available intake passage volume, space which would normally be occupied by air necessary to maintain the power of the engine, the gaseous injection system can have a power loss of as much as 4% when compared to its gasoline counterpart [3].
The only way to overcome this drawback is either to directly inject the fuel into the combustion chamber, increase the compression ratio, or use forced induction (turbocharge or supercharge) to increase the amount of air supplied to the combustion chamber [3].
This is accomplished by circulating excess LPG throughout the injectors and fuel rails, and using the tank as a heat sink.

The K-Jetronic System constantly injects fuel into the engine as long as the car is running and air flow is present to move the sensor plate in the airflow sensor.
By modifying lower chamber pressure, a change in volume of injected fuel is made, enriching or enleaning the mixture.
The fuel accumulator is a large spring-loaded diaphragm that maintains a pressure of about 1.5 to 2.0 bar for 30 minutes or more after engine shutdown.
