EPA: Federal Register: Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation; Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station; Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact
The proposed SFP rack installation at the Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station will not affect any of the assumptions or inputs used in evaluating the dose consequences of a fuel handling accident and therefore will not result in an increase in the doses from a postulated fuel handling accident.
Other than the radwaste generated during the actual raracking operation, the staff does not expect that the additional fuel storage made possible by the increased SFP storage capacity will result in a significant change in the generation of solid radwaste at Wolf Creek.
The Nuclear Waste Policy Act and 10 CFR Part 53, however, clearly place the responsibility for the interim storage of spent fuel with each owner or operator of a nuclear plant.

 FR Doc 04-13752
During the conference call, the petitioner reaffirmed to the PRB the petition's request to stop all fuel movement but stated their understanding that at the present time the request would be limited to the spent fuel pool.
The PRB stated that the petitioner's request to stop all fuel movement at Vermont Yankee is now moot as all fuel movement had been completed by time of receipt of the petitioner's request.
As the basis for this request, the petitioner states that because Entergy has lost control of the spent fuel inventory at Vermont Yankee, the petitioner has no confidence that Entergy did not put leaking fuel or suspected leaking fuel assemblies back into the reactor core during this refueling outage.

 EnergyPulse Article
From an estimated 8% efficiency in Edison's "Big Jumbo" machines at his Pearl Street Station in 1882, by the 1970s the fuel efficiency of generators 500,000 kW and 600,000 kW in size increased to 38% and up to 42% for supercritical units used mostly in Europe where fuel costs were greater.
The Edison central station on Pearl Street in New York was the first central station to serve customers using incandescent lights.
Contrary to popular belief, the first central station was not Edison's Pearl Street Station in Manhattan but was one owned and operated in San Francisco by The California Electric Power Co., one of the predecessors of Pacific Gas & Electric.

Pressurized Water Reactor Encyclopedia Article @ NaturalResearch.org (Natural Research)
Nuclear fission produces neutrons that are too hot to trigger significant further fission within the reactor fuel.
Neutrons striking nuclear fuel (early in the cycle, mainly U-235) in fuel rods lead to fissioning of the fissile atoms, releasing more neutrons and heat.
The heat transfers from the fuel ceramic pellets to the surrounding metal fuel "cladding" which in turn heats the water flowing by the fuel rods.

 Nuclear
A modern nuclear power station can use about 300 tonnes of uranium fuel each year.
Most of this area is used for the main buildings of the power station such as the nuclear reactor, turbine and generator hall.
Not all the energy in the fuel is used up, so the fuel is sent for reprocessing to recover this unused energy and then turned into new fuel.

Fermi 1 was built to generate steam for the production of electricity by using uranium as its atomic fuel -- while, at the same time, produce an inexhaustible supply of fuel in the form of plutonium, which also could be used to fuel nuclear reactors to generate electricity.
All nuclear fuel has been removed permanently from the reactor vessel and is stored in the spent fuel pool located in the plant's containment building.
Fermi 1 was a fast-breeder nuclear reactor and despite its experimental nature, the only one of commercial size in the world.

NSF chooses alternative method to refuel its main Antarctic research station
As a result, NSF personnel at the station are undertaking an alternative method of transferring several million gallons of fuel from a tanker offshore over the sea ice of McMurdo Sound.
In an unrelated incident, a leak in an on-shore fuel tank at a McMurdo Station helicopter pad Feb. 19 resulted in a spill of roughly 6,500 gallons of diesel fuel.
Personnel at McMurdo worked with officials at NSF and at Colorado—based Raytheon Polar Services, NSF's Antarctic logistics contractor, to develop the plans to transfer the fuel safely while protecting the environment of the McMurdo Sound.

The Russian Institute of the Arctic and Antarctic, which manages Vostok, took the decision to mothball the station because it could not deliver sufficient fuel and supplies to keep the base going.
Due to heavier than usual pack ice, a fuel tanker was unable to reach its usual docking berth and a 3.2-km (2 miles) pipeline had to be run across the ice to offload the fuel.
The station usually houses 25 scientists and engineers in the summer and 13 over the winter.

In comparison, about 65 vessels delivered fuel oil to the station in 1998.

 Introduction
Radiation from flask surfaces results either from the flask’s immersion in the power station (or reprocessing plant) cooling ponds whilst loading the fuel, with subsequent failure to properly decontaminate the flask, or from residual radiation which becomes trapped and adheres to the under-surface of the flask’s paint.
Spent fuel transports from the UK’s nuclear power stations form the majority of movements to Sellafield and are undertaken almost wholly by use of the railway network on a regular weekly basis.
The transport of spent fuel to Sellafield, and the return of empty flasks to the power stations, has been undertaken in the past by a succession of rail freight carriers.

One such policy is the closed nuclear fuel cycle that Russia employs—taking spent nuclear fuel, reprocessing it at great danger to the environment and proliferation, and putting the separated uranium and reactor grade plutonim back into use.
One of the worst accidents at any nuclear facility in Japan occurred at a uranium-processing plant in Tokaimura on Sept. 30, 1999, when an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction was triggered after three poorly trained workers used buckets to mix nuclear fuel in a tub.
As the reactors in question also supply heat and electricity to the communities where they are located, the DOE’s task it to shut the reactors down completely and build or refurbish nearby fossil fuel plants to compensate for the power loss when the reactors go off-line.

NRC: Fact Sheet on Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants
When radioactive nuclear fuel is permanently removed from the reactor vessel, the owner must submit another written certification to the NRC, thus losing authority to operate the reactor or load fuel into the reactor vessel.
The owner has converted the turbine-generators into synchronous condensers and have isolated the spent fuel pool within a fuel building "nuclear island." The plant has been placed in SAFSTOR, where it will remain until about 2013 when the decommissioning trust fund will be sufficient to conduct DECON activities.
Under DECON (immediate dismantlement), soon after the nuclear facility closes, equipment, structures, and portions of the facility containing radioactive contaminants are removed or decontaminated to a level that permits release of the property and termination of the NRC license.
