Ishikawa was formed from the merger of Kaga Province and the smaller Noto Province.
On March 1, 2005 the town of Noto and village of Yanagida from the former Fugeshi District merged with the town of Uchiura from the former Suzu District, Ishikawa forming a new town of Noto and the districts merged forming Hosu District.
On February 1, 2006 the town of Monzen from Hosu District and the former city of Wajima merged, forming the new city of Wajima.

Small breeding populations persisted well into the twentieth century on Sado island (Niigita prefecture), the Noto peninsula (Ishikawa prefecture) and possibly on the Oki islands (Shimane prefecture), but the last wild birds were taken into captivity on Sado island in 1981, and it is extinct in the wild in Japan.

The number of Yukiwarisou growing in one area is number one in Japan and between middle of March to beginning of April, many visitors come even from other prefectures to enjoy the flowers.
The area is Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park Special Protection District so please make sure that you are only allowed to take photographs for souvenirs and not the flowers.
At end of March, Noto Yukiwarisou Festival takes place on Monzen Town Soujiji Temple Street.
