It must not be mistaken that such revisionists are fanatical fringe groups who desire to rewrite history, but rather make up a group with considerable political clout.
Among the members of this group are prominent figures such as Fujio Masayuki, formerly a minister of education before being dismissed by the Prime Minister for statements regarding the Massacre as "just a part of war," and Ishihara Shintaro, a leading member of the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan.
Shintaro has stated, "People say that the Japanese made a holocaust there (reference to Nanking), but that is not true.

In September 1986, the Japanese education minister, Fujio Masayuki, referred to the Rape of Nanking as "just a part of war." In 1988, a 30-second scene depicting the Rape of Nanking was removed from Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor by the film's Japanese distributor.
In 1991, censors at the Ministry of Education "ordered textbook authorities to eliminate all reference to the numbers of Chinese killed during the Rape of Nanking because authorities believed there was insufficient evidence to verify those numbers" (Chang, The Rape of Nanking, p.

The Militant - March 6, 2000 -- Chinese protest Japanese denial of Nanking massacre
Ishihara Shintaro, a leading member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party and current governor of Tokyo, told Playboy in 1990 that the Nanjing massacre was a "story made up by the Chinese" that has "tarnished the image of Japan."
Fujio Masayuki, minister of education in 1986, said the number of victims at Nanjing was exaggerated, and anyway, it was "just a part of war." He also said that Korea had willingly accepted Japanese colonization and was partly responsible for its own annexation by Japan in 1910.
While these and other ministers ultimately lost their posts in the wake of such comments, Hashimoto Ryutaro, minister in 1995 for international trade and industry, became the country's prime minister despite his public statements that Japan had harbored no aggressive intentions toward China during World War II.

Nanjing Massacre - widespread atrocities conducted against Chinese civilians by Japan
Dramatic reports by American journalists of Japanese brutality against Chinese civilians helped turn American public opinion against Japan and, in part, led to a series of events which culminated in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Since the Second World War, some Japanese historians and politicians with nationalist or traditionalist perspectives have either denied the existence of atrocities (as, for example, Fujio Masayuki, a Minister of Education), or (more recently) sought to minimize them.
The way in which the subject is taught in Japanese schools became the center of controversy in the Japanese textbook controversies of 1982 and 1986.
