CHICAGO (AP) -Tetsuya Fujita, a University of Chicago meteorologist who devised the standard for measuring the strength of tornadoes and discovered microbursts and their link to plane crashes, has died at 78.
Fujita also discovered microbursts - sudden, severe downdrafts that can result in 150 mph winds on or near the ground - after studying the starburst patterns of trees uprooted by tornadoes.
Fujita did not trust computers to help conduct his analyses, preferring to do it himself, Chicago meteorologist Duane Stiegler said.

 Concept to Reality
Research focused by industry, government agencies, academia, and airlines on this major threat to aviation safety in the 1980s resulted in a vastly improved fundamental knowledge of the atmospheric environment and the critical properties associated with wind shears.
Fujita submitted that a concentrated, strong three-dimensional outflow associated with the ground impact of the downdraft was the real fatal hazard in aircraft encounters.
The one that ultimately became the first in airline service was the Doppler microwave radar, which sends a radio wave ahead of the aircraft to bounce off raindrops in the thunderstorm and return to the instrument.
