Overlooked is the simple fact that when the PC business actually got started in 1975, the price of a typical personal computer was around $2,500, and it slowly went down from there.
So, a computer was 50% of a car in 1975, and a robot is 75% of a car in 2003 (yeah, the $40k kit is pretty steep, about equal to a luxury car).  If the product is compelling and the price slopes down like computers did, robots may not be that far away...

I could see perhaps keeping a found item if you have no way to find the owner, but to refuse return when the owner contacts you and even offers a reward (Un-thinkable) I would have likely returned it without a reward just beacuse it is the right thing to do!
