Fukushima's renown as a master calligrapher began in 1989 when he was artist in residence in conjunction with the exhibition "The Art of Zen Painting and Calligraphy by Japanese Zen Monks, 1600-1925" at the Spencer Museum at the University of Kansas.
This experience proved to be so rewarding, for both Fukushima and his audiences, that he has returned to the United States at least once a year since then to offer calligraphy demonstrations and introduce Americans to the concepts of Zen.
Fukushima's visit is sponsored by the Johnson Museum, the East Asia Program, the Religious Studies Program, the Einaudi Center for International Studies, the Department of Art, the Department of the History of Art and the Japan-America Society-Ithaca Area and is supported by a grant from the Cornell Council for the Arts.

Sato said it is "natural" to revoke his previous approval in 1998 to allow the pluthermal project at TEPCO's Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant when he exchanged views with mayors and other local officials in the area where the No. 1 and No. 2 plants are located.

Fukushima Roshi is head abbot of Tofuku-ji Monastery, one of the great five mountain monasteries (gozan) of Kyoto, Japan and one of the great centers of the Rinzai Zen tradition.
They are technically masterful, reflecting Fukushima's training in the calligraphic arts from an early age as well as his apprenticeship with Okada Roshi and his kaisho or "block" script, and Shibayama Roshi and his exquisite gyosho script.

Fukushima Roshi claimed to reach a level of "unconscious awareness" as he worked: losing himself in the moment, yet becoming the moment, as well.
