Fulk of Anjou, plunderer, murderer, robber, and swearer of false oaths, a truly terrifying character of fiendish cruelty, founded not one but two large abbeys.

This Fulk then took a noble wife from the country of Tours, Roscilla by name, daughter of Warnerius, who at that time owned three castles in the Touraine, the ones called Loches, Villentrasti and Haia, two of which Fulk thereafter acquired by unjust means.
Fulk took Mirebeau and Loudun, as well as Chinon, which belonged to Odo, as well as Saumur and Monsorellum; from there he made war on the men of L'Isle-Bouchard, and returned to Loches through the land of Guenon, which belonged to lord Noaster.
Fulk returned at once to the royal court, and, on the day the king arrived, he and one of his knights, riding the dappled horse of Alan, Conan's eldest son, dismounted before the king's hall.

Probably also the absence of Fulk of Anjou, who had gone on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem soon after his treaty of 1119 with Henry, was a cause of delay, for the natural first move would be for him to demand a return of his daughter and her dowry.
Fulk's stay was not long in the land of which he was in a few years to be king, and on his return he at once sent for his daughter, probably in 1121.
Fulk's reign was disturbed by dissensions among the Latin princes and by the raids of the Turks, whose prisoner he was for a timein 1137.

Loches was a property of the counts of Anjou dating back to the end of the 9th C. Fulk Nerra built the donjon at the start of the 11th C and successive holders built additional walls in the 12th and 13th centuries.
Fulk's point is that the counts of Anjou received the county from the Carolingians, not these ancestors of the Capetians.
The editors believe that Fulk's hostility to the reigning King Philip I and his ancestors reflected the fact that Philip had seduced Fulk's wife and was living with her.

The county was pressed first by Fulk III of Anjou, and his son Geoffrey II from one direction (south) and then by William of Normandy from another (west).
When William was murdered in 942 he was succeeded by his young son (by a Breton mistress), Richard I. Richard's reign is a period of initially a fight for the survival of the Norman land grant and after this was assured by the 950s, subsequently a process of Francification, in culture, government and orientation.
