Full Duplex   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Full Duplex FDDI operations allow simultaneous transmission and reception of data frames at a rate of 100 Mb/s between two FDDI nodes.
The concept of full duplex, as it relates to Local Area Networks (LANS), is simple; modify an existing physical layer transport to transmit and receive data at the same time.
The selection of full duplex mode means both the A and B port are selected for full duplex but only one, either A or B port are used for the live connection.

Full Duplex Support with Windows NT
The term "full duplex" has been used to describe two separate functions, one related to communication between the network adapter miniport driver and the operating system, and the other being the operation of the network adapter itself.
NDIS version 4.0 introduced a feature that was also called "full duplex" but was used in a somewhat different context than the same term when used to describe network adapter operation at the media access control layer.
Because of the full duplex naming convention, many people have assumed that the NDIS full duplex feature was tied to supporting adapters that operate in the full duplex mode at the media access control layer, and as stated above, this is not the case.

Switches - What is Full Duplex?
Full duplex is a point-to-point, collision-free Ethernet* connection over twisted pair or fiber cabling.
Full duplex is primarily useful to extend the distance of an Ethernet where the limitation on length is due to propagation delay, not attenuation.
Full duplex removes the restriction on length due to propagation delay, since a collision cannot occur in full duplex.

Manual Speed and Duplex Mode Configuration
Sometimes you may need to manually set the duplex mode of the card—for example, if the switch is operating at full-duplex but does not autonegotiate.
Ensure that the speed, duplex mode, and autonegotiation of the associated switch are configured the same as on the PCI 10/100Base-TX card.
To manually set the duplex mode of the PCI card, first ensure that your computer has the latest applicable patches installed as listed in the Required and Optional Patches section of this release note.

View the duplex status of port 1/1 on switch B. The show port 1/1 command on switch B indicates that the port operates at half-duplex and 10 Mb.
Another indication of a duplex mismatch is the rapid increase of FCS and alignment errors on the half-duplex side, and runts on the full-duplex port.
Duplex is subservient to speed in the sense that if speed is set to auto, then the duplex cannot be manually set.

Duplex (telecommunications) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Duplex systems are employed in nearly all communications networks, either to allow for a communication "two-way street" between two connected parties or to provide a "reverse path" for the monitoring and remote adjustment of equipment in the field.
Time division duplex has a strong advantage in the case where the asymmetry of the uplink and downlink data speed is variable.
Frequency division duplex (FDD) is the application of frequency-division multiplexing to separate outward and return signals.

www.HelloDirect.com - The Difference Between Half and Full Duplex Explained   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
"Duplex" simply means you're able to send and receive data (most often the human voice) from the same device whether that be with your phone, 2-way radio, or PC.
Conventional speakerphones must shut the speaker off when the mic is activated so as not to pick up your caller's voice and transmit it along with yours causing an echo effect.
While it doesn't quite deliver the same sound quality as full duplex, the special digital circuitry does help reduce the echo and dropout effects.

 IntelĀ® Express 500 Series Switches - Half-Duplex and Full-Duplex
This means that at half duplex, Ethernet throughput is limited by the need to retransmit data when collisions occur.
Auto duplex negotiates whether the attached device is transmitting in half or full-duplex, and then automatically changes that port to that mode.
Normally you would need to configure the port on the switch with a specific speed or duplex mode, but that is not required with auto-negotiation?it detects the capabilities of the other devices (over a common link) and configures itself to use the same technology automatically; this gives maximum efficiency.

 Full Duplex Transmission
Full Duplex transmission indicates the transmission of data in two directions simultaneously.
For example, on a local area network with full-duplex transmission, one workstation can be sending data on the line while another workstation is receiving data.
On the other hand, a half duplex transmission indicates that data transmission happens only in one direction at a time.

 Duplex Mode
If your switch supports NWay* standard and both the adapter and switch are set to auto-negotiate, full duplex is automatic and no action is required on your part.
In this situation, the Negotiable Speeds and Duplexes checkboxes are disabled, since these are set to advertise speeds during auto-negotiation.
To ensure that link is established correctly, auto-negotiation must be disabled on the link partner, and the link should be forced to the same speed and duplex mode used on the adapter.

Duplex mismatch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This, in turn, will quiesce the new traffic over the connection, leaving only the retransmissions and acknowledgements.
This will restart the TCP traffic, which in turn immediately causes lost packets as streaming resumes.
Symptoms of a duplex mismatch are connections that seem to work fine with a ping command, but "lock up" easily with very low throughput on data transfers; the effective data transfer rate is likely to be asymmetrical, performing much worse in one direction than the other.
