Complete Digital Photography » Do you need a full-frame digital SLR?
Really DX sensors born out of cost nessecity and canon switched as soon as it was cost effective to produce full frame where as Nikon is very stupid not to have came out with a Full Frame (and I am a Nikon user).
Full frame sensors may indeed replace *medium format* and that’s way beyond what 35mm film was used for.
But how about some smaller format digital sensors for that are designed to be closer to the back of the lens - sensors that are concave to avoid some of the optical problems of trying to spread a wide angle image onto a digital sensor.

Frames per second: The maximum number of frames per second (frame/s) achievable on digital and film cameras is 8 frame/s (Nikon D2H (additional info and facts about Nikon D2H) digital SLR, Nikon F5 (additional info and facts about Nikon F5) 35 mm film SLR).
Digital photography was used in astronomy (The branch of physics that studies celestial bodies and the universe as a whole) long before its use by the general public and had almost completely displaced photographic plates by the early 1980s.
Cameras with digital sensors that are smaller than the typical 35mm film size will have a smaller field or angle of view (The angle included by a photographic lens) when used with a lens of the same focal length (The distance from a lens to its focus).

Full frame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In cinematography and photography, full frame or flat filming captures all of the desired image along with additional visual information surrounding the target frame.
One advantage of using full frame filming is that it gives the filmmaker a larger picture to work with when creating a pan and scan transfer of the film; one of the disadvantages is that it does not make optimal use of the available film area for widescreen versions, as anamorphic widescreen does.
When projecting a full frame film onto a wide theatrical screen, part of the image must be masked out; this process is known as soft matte.

Cheaper digital cameras that use a memory card however, may compress an image more even on their best quality settings - up to 9-to-1 in some cases so this is yet another factor that can some camera's photos to look worse than anothers, even if they're the same megapixel rating.
CA (Chromatic Aberration) is fairly common on digital cameras, and is an effect where in high contrast areas of a photo, you may see thin magenta or purplish lines that run along an object.
Digital SLR cameras are much more expensive, but handle low-light photos much better, and have less noise in their images.

If you got your digital SLR camera as a kit with a cheap zoom lens this would be a good time to compare the utility of the slow zoom lens with the fast prime lens.
Thus to get this kind of background blur with a mid-range digital SLR you would still need to use a 300/2.8 lens even though the same magnification and subject scale could be achieved with a 200mm lens.
Although this lens is a full f-stop faster than the cheap zoom telephotos, which are usually f/5.6 at their long ends, it is two f-stops slower than the 100/2 prime lens and that is going to hurt if you are taking portraits in natural light.

However, high-pixel count, full-frame sensors are also incredibly demanding in terms of optical performance, highlighting aberrations such as distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberrations and lens softness.
