Squad automatic weapon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A squad automatic weapon (SAW) is a light or general-purpose machine gun, usually equipped with a bipod and firing a rifle-caliber bullet.
Fully automatic weapons require large amounts of expensive live-fire training before troops learn to actually hit targets while not wasting ammunition.
Hand-held fully automatic fire is difficult to control and is less likely to hit an incapacitating part of the enemy's anatomy.

Correct use of three round bursts and automatic fire.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Bursts will be fired only when beating off an enemy assault, making a counterthrust (against a penetration, in close combat), or at very short ranges during combat in trenches, towns, or woods.
A more effective use of automatic fire is to put a short burst into each target and not waste rounds in the gaps between them.
While manuals state that such weapons should mainly be used to fire 3 round bursts in practice this may not be done in the heat of combat.

Automatic fire sprinklers provide a significant level of protection for the occupants of a building together with protection of the environment by minimising the effects that a major structural fire could have.

 Glossary Of Firearm Terms
Automatic Pistols: A pistol that uses part of the energy of the firing of a cartridge to operate a mechanism that ejects the spent cartridge and loads a new cartridge from a magazine.
Automatic Rifles: A rifle that uses part of the energy of the firing of a cartridge to operate a mechanism that ejects the spent cartridge and loads a new cartridge from a magazine.
Note that assault rifles and "assault weapons" differ mainly in that the former are fully automatic and the latter are semiautomatic.

Beretta had equipped a pistol with the ability to fire fully automatic before, with their M951, but while succesful, it had also shown that a pistol-sized weapon was very difficult to control in fully automatic fire.
Firing either single shots or the devestating three shot burst, it is a typical Beretta firearm, mechanically solid, and a with great finish.
Also, since it can fire fully automatic bursts, a special permit to own the gun is needed.

Following the recommendations of the German Rifle Testing Commission (Spandau) for an individual, light weight weapon capable of fully automatic fire, Schmeisser was tasked to develop a weapon for the close quarters combat of trench warfare.
This, along with the use of a shoulder stock, allowed the weapon to be controllable in fully automatic fire, giving the user the ability to engage multiple targets in cramped quarters in a very short amount of time.
Also, the very low recoil generated allows more efficient use of full automatic fire, so the concept is a viable solution from that point of view.

In 1978, fully automatic firearms were banned, although anyone who legally possessed them at the time was deemed a “genuine gun collector” and was permitted to retain them as “grandfathered” weapons.

The G3 is typical of its day: a rifle chambered in 7.62 x 51 mm NATO, capable of semi-automatic or fully-automatic fire and using a detachable magazine, like the FN FAL or the M14.
The G3 uses a firing mechanism that was developed from a roller-locking system patented by Edward Stecke of Poland during the 1930s; this was used in the MG-42.
It also has another failing shared with other rifles of its caliber: Although the G3 is capable of fully automatic fire, in practice this is not extremely useful, as the recoil generated by the 7.62 NATO cartridge makes fully automatic operation impractical at ranges beyond a few steps.
