Northern Fulmars are one of the commonest seabirds in northern Britain and are present year-round, with no pronounced migration after becoming adult.
This was an improvement on both previous censuses: In the SCR Census (1985-88) around 25% of Fulmars in Ireland were not counted including 10% in Counties Antrim, Kerry, Clare and Mayo, and 40% in Donegal.
Large numbers of Northern Fulmars are also caught and killed accidentally by the long-lining fleet in the Norwegian Sea and also probably in the North Atlantic.

The Fairey Fulmar was a carrier-borne fighter aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm built by Fairey Aviation during 1940.
Two types of Fulmar were produced; the Mark I was powered by the Rolls Royce Merlin VIII engine and the Mark II was powered by the Merlin 30.
The Fulmar was not well matched with land-based fighters so was replaced by the likes of the Supermarine Seafire in 1942.

Aircraft: The Fulmar was developed from an FAA (Fleet Air Arm) request for carrier-borne aircraft similar to the Hurricanes and Spitfires used in the RAF.
The Fulmar first flew in the early days of 1940 and was essentially based as a modified and lighter version of the Fairey Battle.
The Fulmars were generally initially employed in the Mediterranean and fought against the Italian Air Force with some success but when the Luftwaffe came into the fray the poor manoeuvrability and performance compared to that of their counterparts exposed them and losses were severe.

The first Fulmar Mk Is flew in 1940 to favourable handling reports, but since the aircraft was powered by a single Merlin engine, the speed was on the slow side and the ceiling was a little low.
It is also worthy to note that the Fulmar had eight guns (the same as the Spitfire and the Hurricane), but carried twice the ammunition as these two aircraft, and had an endurance of five hours (much more than either the Hurricane or Spitfire).
The Vista Fulmar is contained in a typical Czech 1/72-type model box with a high aspect ratio, and an attractive painting on the front of a Fulmar Mk II in flight.

Such was the need, Fulmars were delivered to 806 Squadron for operation from the new armored carrier HMS “Illustrious” in June 1940 with final equipment by the end of July.
By the time the Fulmar was withdrawn from front-line fleet service on August 12, 1942, it was responsible for the destruction of 112 enemy aircraft in air combat and over 80 damaged.
So far as I am aware, the first Fulmar in kit form was a very nice vacuform produced by Rareplanes in the early 1970s, followed by an injection molded kit from Vista - later re-released by Revell of Germany, and a recent limited-run kit from Special Hobby.

Fulmar was built in Seattle and brought to it's home port of Monterey in August 2006.
The vessel has been named the Fulmar, after a seabird common to the region, and will be stationed at a new floating dock next to the U.S. Coast Guard Pier at the Monterey Harbor.
The Fulmar is the fourth in the line of small vessels built to the requirements defined by the NOAA sanctuary program.
