On the National Register of Historic Places, and one of three National Landmark theatres in the country, the Fulton Opera House is a living landmark of the American theatre.
Built as a "community building" in 1852 for the entertainment of the citizenry with concerts and lectures, committee meetings and conventions, Fulton Hall utilized part of the heavy foundations of the old stone jail to which prisoners were once shackled.
In 1873 it was converted into an opera house by one of the great theatrical designers of the day, Edwin Forrest Durang, grandson of John Durang, born in Lancaster in 1768 and recognized as the first American-born professional actor.

Lancaster, PA (March 27, 2003) - The Fulton Opera House today announced a $35,000 grant, the first portion of a two-year funding commitment, from the Citizens Bank Foundation.
The Guild, a Fulton auxiliary organization, will sell drinks and candy at the theatre's concession stand and patrons of "Play Days" are encouraged to partake of the downtown area restaurants and Central Market for refreshment.
The Fulton Opera House Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with the mission of preserving the building as a National Historic Landmark and providing a center for the performing arts in Central Pennsylvania.

During the 1850s and 1860s, Fulton Hall featured noted political orators including William Jennings Bryan, and in May 1856, the Republican Party of Lancaster County was born on its stage.
When vaudeville and the motion pictures arrived the Fulton Opera House adjusted to the "new age" of entertainment, the ornate interior had grown a bit dusty and faded, but Madam Ernestine Schumann-Heink brought the World War 1 audience to tears with her deeply-moving songs.
As the centennial of the "old Lady of Prince Street" drew near in 1952, the community was stirred to action by the possibility of the venerable opera house being torn down.

John Drew – an actress who later became the matriarch of the Barrymore theater family, was performing in the Fulton Opera House auditorium.
Built as Fulton Hall in 1852 on the grounds of a pre—Civil War jail, the "Grand Old Lady of Prince Street" featured the prominent entertainers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including Sarah Bernhardt, Al Jolson and Alfred Lunt.
Some of the Fulton’s most notable architectural features include two plaster-release angels – one wearing a comedy mask, the other, a tragedy mask – and three large stained-glass windows in the lobby.

It was, during the 75 minutes of auction I attended, one of the few pieces of Fulton history that I could reasonably afford.
I suppose it was used for moving scenery around on the Fulton stage.
