The Fulvous Whistling Duck, Dendrocygna bicolor, is a whistling duck which breeds across the world's tropical regions in much of Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and the United States Gulf Coast.
The habitat is still freshwater lakes, ricefields or reservoirs with plentiful vegetation, where this duck feeds mainly at night on seeds and other plant food.
The Fulvous Whistling Duck is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

However, a family of Fulvous Whistling-ducks showed up in the West Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge last Sunday, and have been regularly seen there almost every day last week, so this morning bright and early I took the A-train to Broad Channel to see if I could add this bird to my life list.
They’d seen the three ducks fly over earlier around 8:00 A.M.; but I think this as the first siting on land this morning.

Their unusal whistling call has woke me up a time or two to go out and find a cat near the aviary, making them, in my opinion, good watch ducks!
As you can see from the photo to the left, the bird has the same features and fl on the back as the normal form, but the light tan of the rest of the body has been replaced with light gray.
