		"de/module" is a track that reminded me of earlier funckarma ("parts" or some of the "solid state") - similar approach to blending multiple layers of heavy percussion with calm, gentle melody.
		funckarma's mix of "estrella" is stellar, as expected - spontaneous irregularity, with explosions of percussion and stuttering rhythmic textures among swelling graceful lines; distant small keys and massive fast-paced breaks, suspended in mid-motion.
		i think this is where it is interesting to compare and contrast the sound of funckarma and gridlock, both at some point arriving to the same style, both from different directions, and then departing with quieter new funckarma releases ("part 5" and "elaztiq") and increasingly complex and driving sound of gridlock.

	Funckarma - Refurbished One (n5md/Couchblip) / Elaztiq Bourbon 5 (Sending Orbs) at Thermostat
		Neither are really new albums: refurbished one collects remixes done by the boys between 2001 and 2004, while Elaztiq Bourbon 5 compiles three 12″s between 2001 and 2003.
		The remix collection is not surprisingly the more varied release; but that said, the sound throughout is consistently Funckarma’s.
		In particular “Lignite”, from dub records’ Part 5, combines beautiful cold synth pads with a deceptively simple 6/8 beat which mutates via every available permutation of effect and syncopation into a virtuoso drum solo that has to be heard to be believed.

		About the Chefs: Funckarma's brotherly team of Don and Roel Funcken were so damned hammered when we talked to them last, they couldn't tell us much about themselves.
		So, here's what we've been able to glean from their incoherent slobbering: they're in their late 20s, from the Netherlands and have been making music for over two years under the names Funckarma and Cenik for labels ranging from Djak-Up-Bitch, U Cover, Music Aus Strom and Neo Ouija to Isophlux, Toytronic, Eat This and n5MD.
		Roel said something about being a former Dutch national DJ finalist when he was just thirteen and having studied "Sonologie" at university, while Don may or may not have been in the IT industry in some capacity.

		Holland’s Funckarma are playing at Frigid this Sunday.
		Even better are their spikey hip hop beats for hip hop crew the Shadow Huntaz.
		I didn’t really rate the rapping or rhymes - I don’t rate very much hip hop these days - but the beats are great, and I hope that Funckarma drop a few instrumentals in their live set.

		The Funcken Brothers went into the studio with the original bits and pieces of the track and came out with two totally different versions.
		Beside the original version (and the a capella which is pretty classic hip hop stuff in the eyes of electronica fans (can be compared with Cannibal Ox stuff), we have Funckarma mix 1 (Vocal plus instrumental) which is very laidback almost dubby with a bouncing bass line.
		And even tho its not classic hip hop...it still has a very strong hip hop feel in it and it is very relaxed and clean compared to the second mix....
