Topic: Functionality creep

Functionality creep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Functionality creep is what occurs when an item, process, or procedure designed for a specific purpose ends up serving another purpose for which it was not intended.
Due to functionality creep, the fact that each person has a unique SSN has led them be misused as a de facto identification number for each person.
SSNs are often requested for other non-Social Security related government functions, such as income tax filing and passport issuance, as well as some non-government functions such as tracking credit history, employee ID numbers, and school records.

Creeping featurism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Creeping featurism, or creeping featuritis, is a phrase used to describe software which over-emphasizes new features to the detriment of other design goals, such as simplicity, compactness, stability, or bug reduction.
Creeping featurism is often accompanied by the mistaken belief that "one small feature" will add zero incremental cost to a project, where cost can be money, time, effort, or energy.
Functionality creep, when a physical document or other non-computer related procedure ends up serving unexpected or unplanned purposes.

 Instruction creep - Meta
It is an insidious disease, originating from ignorance of the KISS principle and resulting in overly complex procedures that are often misunderstood, followed with great irritation or ignored.
Instruction creep is common in complex organizations where rules and guidelines are created by changing groups of people over extended periods of time.

Feature - The New Face Of Creep Feed Grinding
Creep feed grinding allows a hardened workpiece to be machined from the solid in a single pass, replacing milling, broaching or other types of grinding.
Creep feed grinding has been around for more than two decades, but it is not a widely used process, except in some automotive and aerospace applications, notably those involving deep slots or complex profiles in tough materials difficult or impossible to grind with conventional methods.
The ingredients of creep feed grinding: hardened workpieces securely clamped in a fixture, flood coolant delivered from a high-pressure nozzle, a grinding wheel that is porous and holds its sharpness, all on a machine tool with the thrust and rigidity for the job.

The functionality may be of the type which results in A and/or B becoming partially cross-linked during the polymerisation reaction to form it; comonomers providing this type of cross-linking functionality are polyunsaturated monomers examples of which include allyl methacrylate, diallyl maleate, diallyl phthalate and divinyl benzene.
A further alternative type of functionality is of the type which results in latent cross-linking of A and/or B by the addition of an external separately added substance i.e.
Creep at elevated temperatures or creep resistance unless otherwise specified is determined by preparing a test specimen as for contactibility but making the adhesive bond under a load of 3.5 Kg/cm.sup.2 for 60 seconds and ageing for 7 days prior to testing.

Measuring with Function Points   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
If we added function points to the scenario and realized that system B is one-fourth the size of system A, we would view system A as possessing higher quality than system B. System A would have fewer defects per functionality maintained.
Cost per function point may also be used to compare the cost of developing an internal solution to the cost of purchasing a commercial package solution, or to compare internal cost to an external industry (benchmark) cost.
The function point component of the equation usually represents the total number of function points for the release; however, it can be modified to represent only those function points associated with each repair.

Polymer engineering - What is Creep?
Creep is the continued extension or deformation of a plastic part under continuous load.
Creep data is usually expressed as “apparent creep modulus” as a function of the logarithm of time under constant load (assumed to be constant stress).
Creep measurements are probably the easiest long-term tests to perform --- one simply sets up the specimen, hangs a weight on it, and periodically measures and records the change in deflection.

Scope Creep   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Scope creep can also occur when the business requirements were not well defined upfront, and thus the scope changes over the course of the project as requirements are solidified.
Additional causes of scope creep can include: (a) underestimating the complexity of a problem in unknown territory; (b) being a perfectionist; (c) consolidation of multiple projects; and (d) misunderstandings due to a scope that was not clearly defined.
While scope creep can not be linked as the primary cause of all this, many believe it is one of the major contributing factors to project failures of these types.

They include the functionality that will be counted in the initial application function point count, as well as any functionality required for data conversion.

Feature creep is reactionary and a defensive strategy, and as a result rarely adds significant consumer value.

Simply stated, function points are a standard unit of measure that represent the functional size of a software application.
Although the first two steps are very important in setting the groundwork for your count, and specifying the scope of your count, they are usually performed very quickly, and it is the third step that really takes the majority of the FPA time, and is the heart of the count.
The total unadjusted function point count for this application (at this date and time) is 99 function points.

Whether you forgot to include the cost of rack mounts in your budget or you left out some portion of code that a requirement is dependent on, the amount of time you have for project planning is never enough.
Because the developers are usually more proficient in the code they are writing than their project manager, changes and enhancements can be made and not discovered until the phase has entered quality assurance.

Tips for Preventing Project Management Scope Creep
Scope creep is the insidious growth and/or change of project requirements.
Scope creep happens because mortals cannot always anticipate and identify all requirements ‘up front’—systems are too complex and the business and technical environments change too quickly.
We wanted to make it perfect with the first release, because we knew scope creep was “bad.” The fact of the matter was, we crept the scope and had subsequent releases in order to get it right.
