Kusarigama - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Usage of the kusari fundo is taught in Bujinkan ninjutsu.
Whether or not ninja embraced the weapon, records show that the kusari-gama was extremely popular in feudal Japan, with many schools teaching it, from about the 12th to 17th Century.
A notable example of the use and mis-use of the weapon is the story of the great 17th Century kusari-gama teacher Yamada Shinryukan.

 E-Budo.com - kusari-fundo (Bujinkan)
The 'fundo pictured in S. Hayes "Ninjutsu, Art of Invisibilty", was one of the first things that interested me in the Bujinkan, way back in the day.
Working striking patterns from the Bujinkan's nine angles of attack and maybe 5 kata(henka?) is the extent of my 'fundo repetoire...I especially like oni-kudaki variations with the 'fundo.
That is it as far as video resources that I know of...lots of pages out there mention the kusari...and a little history normally...but I have not seen much else.

The above picture is of kusari fundo, there is also another type called manriki gusari witch have smaller weights.
An interesting note about the Manriki was that it was especially popular with the palace guard of Japan, because it was sacrilege to spill blood on palace grounds, but the chain could strike, strangle and entrap without wounding.
Manriki: This is a chain weapon about two and a half feet long with one metal weight on each end.

That was fun - Deluxe Martial Arts Forums
You essentially want to concentrate on using the rigidity of the kusari to pop the bo out of the way (using taisabaki to avoid the strike, or basically moving in an angle to avoid the attack for those who don't know), and then close the distance quickly so you get out of their striking range.
Got a nasty cold from the water and a few good bumps on the head from experimenting with the best way to defend against a bo if all you have is a kusari fundo, but all in all fun times.
After that, we got creative with how we took them down, strangling with the bo or kusari, using sampo geris (hidden kicks, often hitting the feet, knees, or nuts) or sokuyaku kens (heel/sole foot dance) while snatching their bos from them.

 Kyoketsu Shoge
The kusari gama was made famous by such legendary sword masters as Shishido Baikin, who defeated over thirty five swordsmen in mortal combat.
It is believed that the kyoketsu shoge was forerunner to the more well known kusari gama, a chain and sickle weapon used during Japan's Warring States period (1467-1568).
It appears to be a weapon that is often dropped into a technique just the same as Kusari Fundo.
