Zygmunt Janiszewski - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the outbreak of World War I he was a soldier in the Polish Legions of Józef Piłsudski.
In 1920, Janiszewski, together with Wacław Sierpiński and Stefan Mazurkiewicz, founded the important mathematical journal Fundamenta Mathematica.
Janiszewski spent the inherited family property left by his father for charity and education.

Nearly all the editions of Fundamenta Mathematica (32 volumes) and ten volumes of Mathematical Monograph were completely burned.
Private libraries of all the four professors of mathematics from Warsaw University and also quite a number of manuscripts of their works and handbooks written during the war were burnt too.

Fundamenta Mathematica is founded by Sierpinski and Mazurkiewicz.
He proves fundamental results about axiomatic systems showing in any axiomatic mathematical system there are propositions that cannot be proved or disproved within the axioms of the system.

The long unsatisfied demand for education in the new nation gave rise to a large enrollment of students, many of whom were mathematically talented; the combination of enthusiastic and talented faculty, mirrored by the same qualities in the students led to an active and lively mathematical atmosphere.
The publication of Banach's thesis in Volume 3 of Fundamenta Mathematicae had marked the beginning of functional analysis as a discipline, and much of its development was recorded in Studia Mathematica.
In 1919 he joined the faculty of the University of Warsaw and started work as one of the editors of Fundamenta Mathematica; he died from influenza in 1920 before the first issue appeared and before most of his plans could be implemented.

It is both safe and trite to say that the level of exposition in journals reporting on mathematical research is not high.
In the Swedish journal Acta Mathematica before the turn of this century, articles began with a leisurely introduction, ended with not a very short summary, and authors tried to keep papers self-contained.
Papers in Fundamenta Mathematica that appeared before the second world war are a delight to read because masters such as Kuratowski and Sierpinski valued clear communication over flaunting their erudition.

The best introduction to this field and to its many current practitioners can be obtained by perusing the Real Analysis Exchange.
For the last three decades this journal has played the role that the Fundamenta Mathematica did during the mid 20th century when real analysis was a fashionable branch of pure mathematics.
