Fundulus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Fundulus bermudae is closely related to Fundulus heteroclitus, which can be found along the eastern coast of the United States.  Specimens that I have collected were about 3  inches in length but some have been found that reached 5 inches in length.
These Fundulus are easy to maintain in captivity.  They spawn readily, preferring to deposit their eggs in floating mops made of nylon yarn.
So, the next time that you think of Bermuda's endemic species, I hope that you remember our Fundulus killies.  Keep an eye out for them the next time you visit one of the ponds that they inhabit and you may be rewarded by their blue and yellow colours as they dash past.

 ADW: Fundulus heteroclitus: Information
Fundulus heteroclitus, a species of killifish commonly known as the mummichog, occurs along the Atlantic coast of North America.
All Fundulus heteroclitus have a single soft dorsal fin and their pelvic fins are located close to the rear fin (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Services Center, 2001).
Fundulus heteroclitus have the ability to spawn up to eight times in one season (Rutherford, 1996).

 Fundulus cingulatus, by Bob McDonnell
Fundulus cingulatus is an egg-laying toothcarp of the family Cyprinodontidae.
The full 30" (76mm) length of the tank is well used during the cingulatus "playful-chasing"; a tank much shallower than their 18" (46 cm) home would, however, serve just as well--this is decidedly an upper-level fish.
Fundulus cingulatus is a very pleasant fish to have around.

 ZFIN ZF Monitor Vol 3(3)
The only generalization that can be made about the ingressive behavior of cells of the marginal region of the Fundulus blastoderm from stages 13 1/4-15 1/2 is that relatively few cells remain at the margin or move to the margin of the blastoderm to undergo ingression there.
I have not observed any cells of the marginal region of the blastoderm leave the surface and sink in during the blastula period (stage 12), whether at the margin or as far away as 6 cells distant from the margin.
Indeed, the diminution of ingression at stages 15-15 1/2 is correlated with a change to a dominant filolamellipodial, contact-inhibiting mode of cell movement in the now definitive germ ring and with convergence toward the embryonic shield.

The barrens topminnow (Fundulus julisia) was the subject of Pat Rakes' thesis at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Restricted to only a few localities on the Barrens Plateau area of Cannon, Coffee, and Warren counties, Tennessee, the barrens topminnow is an inhabitant of clear, spring-fed streams and relies on aquatic vegetation for spawning.
Low water conditions at the type locality led to the fear in the fall of 1998 that this population might be extirpated.
