visioncareproducts.com / September 2001 / Fundus Cameras go Digital   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Today fundus cameras can be fitted with an electronic option like a video recorder or digital recording device that allows the retina’s image to be captured and displayed on a monitor or stored in a computer file and used later for other purposes (see “Video vs. Digital,” see below).
Film-based fundus cameras have the ability to produce photographic transparencies (slides) or Polaroid prints, and the sharpness of film is unquestionable.
Electronic fundus imaging equipment will cost more than its film counterpart, but the operational costs will be much lower and you’ll likely use it for more aspects of your practice.

Fundus photography is an important tool for documentation of the presence and progression of different pathologic processes.
The difficulty in obtaining good mouse fundus photographs is primarily due to the small size of mouse eyes and the very small pupil that limits the amount of light reflected back from the fundus.

OPS - Fundus Photography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The ocular fundus is the inner lining of the eye made up of the Sensory Retina, the Retinal Pigment Epithelium, Bruch's Membrane, and the Choroid.
When performing ophthalmic fundus photography for diagnostic purposes, the pupil is dialted with eye drops and a special camera called a fundus camera is used to focus on the fundus.
The resulting images can be spectacular, showing the optic nerve through which visual "signals" are transmitted to the brain and the retinal vessels which supply nutrition and oxygen to the tissue set against the red-orange color of the pigment epithelium.

 Review of Ophthalmology
As a first year ophthalmology resident, each of us was trained to view the ocular fundus with the indirect ophthalmoscope and diagram the findings with colored pencils on a large retinal drawing sheet.
The small-angle systems typically have a light source mounted near the camera and employ transpupillary illumination of the fundus, in which the light is directed through the pupil into the posterior segment of the eye.
This system is ideal for imaging broad areas of the fundus for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa, peripheral retinal abnormalities and intraocular tumors.

eMedicine - Anterior Segment and Fundus Photography : Article by Michael F Chiang, MD, MA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Although nonmydriatic fundus cameras use infrared illumination to focus on eyes that have not been dilated pharmacologically, conventional fundus cameras all require a pupil of at least 3.5 mm to about 7.0 mm (minimum pupil size varies with the size of the projected annulus).
Novice fundus photographers sometimes forget that the reticle must be seen clearly at all times and that it provides a crucial reference point for focusing the fundus image (Wong, 1976).
The 30° field size is considered the standard for fundus imaging and is capable of recording the optic disc, macula, and region between the superotemporal and inferotemporal vascular arcades.

When you view through a correctly adjusted eyepiece before the fundus has been focused on, then the fundus appears blurry while the reticle is distinctly sharp.
After correctly adjusting the eyepiece and the fundus camera's focusing mechanism, both the fundus image and the reticle appear sharp and clear.

Except for an earlier age of onset, Sorsby's fundus dystrophy closely resembles other types of macular degeneration, such as age-related macular degeneration, which is the commonest cause of blindness in persons aged 65 and older.
The Sorsby's Fundus Dystrophy Registry maintains a database that is composed exclusively of information knowingly and voluntarily provided to the SFDR by the participants.
