Fungemia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fungemia (also called Candidemia/Candedemia and Invasive Candidiasis) is the presence of fungi or yeasts in the blood.
It is most commonly seen in immunosuppressed or immunocompromised patients with severe neutropenia, oncology patients, or in patients with intravenous catheters.
The most commonly known pathogen is Candida albicans, causing roughly 70% of fungemias, followed by Torulopsis glabrata with 10%, and Aspergillus with 1%.

The clinician is reminded that persistence of fungemia after removal of an intravascular catheter should prompt ultrasonographic examination of the heart and associated great vessels for evidence of this complication.
Treatment of fungemia caused by Candida species requires both expertise and persistence; the most common mistake especially in immunocompromised hosts, is the failure to administer sufficient quantities of antifungal therapy because of fear of renal compromise.
Fungemia in HIV children is rare, and is most often ascribable to catheter-related infections.

 Candida Infections
Fungemia occurs in up to 12% of HIV-infected children with chronically indwelling central venous catheters for total parental nutrition or intravenous antibiotics (2,7).
Duration of therapy in treatment of fungemia should be determined by the presence of deep tissue foci, patient clinical response, and presence of neutropenia.

Fungemia is the presence of fungi circulating in the blood.
Fungemia has also been associated with patients who have diabetes mellitus; or those who have suffered severe burns, undergone major surgery, or received total parenteral nutrition or corticosteroids.
Higher mortality may be related to the delay in diagnosis of the fungal infection, difficulty in treating fungemia, and the association of fungemia with the use of invasive medical devices such as central venous catheters.
