The slap and pop method, in which notes and percussive sounds are created by slapping the string with the thumb and releasing strings with a snap, was pioneered by Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone in the 1960s and early 1970s.
Tony Levin, the bassist for King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, pioneered the use of wooden dowels affixed with velcro to the tips of the index and middle fingers and used to strike the strings of the bass.

In my case I grinded a longer route in the stick on finger 2 (about 1/5" more) so I cannot use either on either finger as their length is rather dispair, but maybe this isn't your case and you can grind them up to the same length.

Keep in mind, 5 fingered instrumentalists manage to manipulate 7-string, 8-string, 12-string instruments and many other variations of string setups regardless of their finger limitations.
Lots of different styles would spawn from 4 fingered and 6 fingered humans as each hand stretchs differently, it would use scales more easily applied with their hands.
VWF Funk Fingers are short(I am guessing they are about 4" long) wooden pieces that fit on the finger and the guitarist taps the stings with them.

I was just reading over the funk fingers invention, as it's a hobby of mine to experiment with my bass in dangerous ways, by hitting them with such objects as drills, bolts, nuts, cups etc. The funk fingers really appealed to me! But just as I opened my wallet...
Use the funk fingers to hit the strings in a certain percussive pattern and hammer on and pull off with your fretting hand.
For those just trying out Funk Fingers, Here's a couple of 'tips' that may be helpful: 1) take your time getting used to them, I initially had problems in hitting ONLY the string I wanted (esp. the A and D strings!), but with practice, it gets easier (try doing scales slowly).

I personally need the sticks to be pretty tightly wrapped around my fingers - if they are loose, you can't get the necessary "bounce" off the strings, and there's a lack of control which makes them really hard to use.
A good way to build the dexterity for Funk Fingers with less frustration may be this (I played one of the FF songs in my band using this technique before I had the Funk Fingers.)
Be sure to anchor most of the whole side of your thumb on the body of the bass - the action should be isolated to the finger, not the wrist or the arm.

 Funk Festival, Granian, Games Headline Event-Filled Weekend
The largest event of the weekend was the Funk Festival on Friday night, featuring Maceo Parker, Fishbone, and Five Fingers of Funk.
Although not an official Spring Weekend event, a concert at the same time as the Funk Festival featuring the pop band Granian at Baker House was attended by about 250 people despite the fact that some people who had arrived early left when the opening band failed to show up.
