Funki Porcini (born James Bradell) has so far released three solo albums, which were all generally well received by critics.
His music has unfortunately not broken into the mainstream, perhaps because it is too instrumental for radio airplay.
When I could not find a detailed Funki Porcini website, I decided to make my own.

Porcini’s debut LP Hed Phone Sex was something of a stylistic masterpiece, significantly different from the typical trip-hop grooves that ruled the airwaves at the time.
Porcini starts to experiment with multiple computer-aided effects on drums at once, keeping everything in line with that funky bass and a distinct stop start percussion noise.

Funki Porcini's music is the fruit of a well-travelled life.
Porcini left England at 19 to escape from a squat in Kings Cross being savaged by violent Scots stranded in London after a football game.
After establishing connections with Ninja Tune from Italy Porcini eventually came back to the mother ship and immersed himself in his studio 'The Uterus Goldmine' to produce the first album 'Hed Phone Sex,' a heady record openly made more for the pillows than for the dance floor.

Funki Porcini, or James Bradell to his friends, has produced some of the most beautiful music on the Ninja Tune record label, and his latest effort, Fast Asleep, is his most sublime release yet.
The album opens with What Are You Looking At, which eases you into Funki Porcini’s somnambulant world, almost like pushing yourself off a jetty into a still, dark lake.
The title Fast Asleep is perfect, not because it's boring and will send you to sleep, but because the slightly strange and distant sounds lap at your consciousness in the same way remnants of dreams make their way into your waking state.

In fact, Funki Porcini was one of the original artists on the label.
While Funki Porcini will mostly be thought of as "armchair electronica" he will also be thought of as one of the best in the genre.

Keeping consistent with his unearthly sense of the cerebral and horizontal, Funki Porcini's fourth long player for Ninja Tune, Fast Asleep, subscribes once again to a world governed by lazy atmospherics, sleazy beats, and jazz-soaked instrumentation.
Always less immediate than his "chill out" peers, Porcini melds the electronic and organic divide, with enough soundscaped subtleties to draw the listener in.

A sweeping indictment if ever there was one, but then, Funki Porcini has been, shall we say, round the block a few times.
Working with his old friend Rupert Small, AKA Team Alcohol, Porcini has painstakingly home-made an eight film DVD to accompany his music, and it is a triumph of imagination and resourcefulness over digital trickery.
In a similar way to Porcini’s music the films rely on textures, atmospheres, and the familiar subjected to his own inimitable view.

First off, when the Funki One wants to jam in the grand big-beat fashion of Prodigy or Fatboy Slim, he does so in a way that'd make those pretenders to the throne weep in shame.
The enormous tuba blasts found in "Theme From Sugar Daddy" and funky guitar licks are actually quite soothing, and even after the beat kicks into high gear, it does so in a very smooth fashion that'll leave you perfectly content to just continue sitting there nodding your head uncontrollably.

Though his name conjures up the image of a young stoner with multiple nose rings and a tea cozy for a hat, Funki Porcini is a slightly older, somewhat portly knob-twiddler.
Funki's menacing grooves, creative use of tape-reversal and zippy cut-ups from Bonanza and The Price Is Right add danger and wit to the more cinematic tracks, leaving you as riveted as you were the first time you watched The Usual Suspects.
Funki says he chose the title of his new album because it sounded like a film title, and he's anti-big wealth.

Then there's "Venus," a sample fest of brass and vibes culled from Tangerine Dream, the Tijuana Brass, and Bobby Hutcherson, swaggering sleazily in a mud bath of marimbas, portly bass, and drunken bop reverie.

 * Dusted Reviews - Funki Porcini *
Funki Porcini’s Fast Asleep, a trademark Ninja Tune release, completely captures the minutiae of shifting patterns within sleep — the hiccups and snorts and stops and starts and highs and lows, all anchored by a deep tide of ambience that continually clears the sand for new patterns to be drawn.
And yet, within that somewhat limited downtempo framework, Funki Porcini almost imperceptibly slips in sleights of hand, shifts in mood that alter colors and textures instantaneously, masterfully.
The resulting sound is nothing particularly new and definitely rooted in the irony-free, earnestly stoned aesthetic of a couple of years ago, but at the same time, the album is completely well done without sounding anachronistic.

James Braddell, a k a Funki Porcini, takes the new beat science a step beyond the hyperfast bpms of typical jungle.
Loosely based around themes of violence, death and the afterlife, the album ends with "Going Down," a slow-mo track that springs like a diver momentarily coming to the surface for air.
Though too much drum and bass is built on a narrow formula of speedy beats and ethereal tones, Funki Porcini broadens break-beat culture with orchestral vision and street-wise wit.

The History of Rock Music. Funki Porcini: biography, discography, reviews, links
Funki Porcini is the project of world citizen James Bradell, an Englishman who spent the 1980s scavenging the San Francisco industrial scene and then traveled to Los Angeles, New York, Berlin and finally Rome to find his true voice.
An operation similar to Foetus' deconstruction of big band jazz led Bradell to the horns-based pastiches of Carwreck, Groover and The Last Song, clearly a new artistic avenue beyond trip-hop.
That was precisely the direction of his subsequent mini-album, Let's See What Carmen Can Do (Ninja Tune, 1997), virtually a jazz instrumental album, redefining Funki Porcini as a lighter version of Squarepusher.

These tracks are all in familiar territory for Funki Porcini [+] fans; the blueprint is earthy breaks (often tipping from trip-hop to jungle to jazz and back again) with a cavalcade of samples -- vocals from desperate, soon-to-be victims, plus a lot of brass, vibes, and drum breaks.
"Flesh Carpet," the finale, sweeps in with a delicious, surprisingly laidback atmosphere, but most of this EP is a trip-hop retread for Funki Porcini [+].

James Bradell aka Funki Porcini may well be the globe-trotter supreme and after downtempo explorations of all kinds, this Fast Asleep LP is finally not the one where his legendary The Residents connection is explored but rather the opportunity to reminisce on the various locations he visited.
The gentle mixture of dark overtones, leftfield effects and rather easy-going trip hop tricks, is cool without ever being extremely convincing but also quite skillfully dodging the overtly easy and vulgar.

The only drawback to Funki Porcini’s music is the constantly slow pace that, while making it ideal for sleeping, poses a challenge to active listeners who like to at least semi-consciously focus on the sound.
The drifting ambience of “What Are You Looking At” is a good introduction that really sets the tone for Fast Asleep, and the strange synth lines on “We're Out Of Here” clash very unnaturally with the muted dance beats in the background.
Anyway, if you’re looking for laid-back electronic music (with similarities to Nightmares On Wax) or something to sleep to, then Funki Porcini’s Fast Asleep is worth a try.
