West Coast Swing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WCS is a slotted dance: the follower travels back and forth along a shoulder width rectangle, called the slot, with respect to the leader.
It is argued that WCS in its modern form was documented and elaborated by Lauré Haile of Arthur Murray Dance Studios, a ballroom dance franchise.
As WCS evolved further, it was found that the coaster step was detrimental to the connection between lead and follow, hence the ascension of the now ubiquitous anchor step where both partners step and end up with one foot behind and to the side of the other.

While abuse of Cuban hip motion in "ballroom WCS," lack of understanding of swung eighths, and dancing rehearsed patterns strung one after another without paying much attention to musical phrasing are among frequent complaints of "true" WCS dancers, the main bone of contention is the Coaster Step variation of the anchor step.

WCS is a ‘slotted dance’, which means that the woman travels forward and back along an imaginary line on the floor, with the man moving on and off her line.
Whilst ballroom dancers tend to strive to achieve an ideal (everyone aims to look the same), WCS dancers are encouraged to use and invent new patterns, body positions, footwork, rhythm variations etc and to develop their own individual style.
Though WCS was originally danced to smooth swing music, many of the best WCS dancers today evolved from the post disco era, giving the dance a more contemporary feel that is constantly developing and transforming.

The Coaster Step was originally a styling variation for followers, practiced by an influential dancer at the Long Beach Arthur Murray studio, and from there was institutionalized in the official syllabus.
This violates the notion of "true" WCS that the follower's motion is completely led.

So to say wcs is this dance that is SO differenet from lindy hop is to say that you don't know the history of wcs.
WCS not only has some different basics (eg the whip, which has different footwork and leads than a swingout) but different mechanics too (eg preps, which lindy follows have a hard time with).
A good example is funk or hip-hop, where a lot of westies will lose their upright posture in place of funky wcs (vs. classic wcs) which better represents the music.
