DVD Verdict Review - Funny Lady
Funny Lady is a lot like Barbra Streisand: a mysterious beast, clearly talented but nonetheless constantly towing the line between endearing and annoying.
Funny Lady tries to recreate the charms of the first film, but in doing so succeeds only to highlight some of the trappings of a musical when there's no story to hang the songs on.
Funny Lady makes the mistake of making Fanny little more than a soldier of love, and we never sense her pain, or her fear of one day not being loved, by Billy or by an audience.

Barbra Streisand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Her recording success continued, and at one time, Streisand's first three albums appeared simultaneously on Billboard's pop albums Top Ten - an unusual feat considering it was at a time when rock and roll and The Beatles dominated the charts.
Jule Styne's and Bob Merrill's Funny Girl (1964), based upon the life of Fanny Brice, was fashioned for Streisand after Styne saw Streisand's Wholesale performance, though the wife of Ray Stark (the show's producer), daughter of Fannie Brice, was strongly opposed, and preferred Carol Burnett.
Her first film was a reprise of her Broadway hit, Funny Girl (1968), a stunning artistic and commercial success, for which she won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Actress, sharing it with Katharine Hepburn (The Lion in Winter), the first time there was a tie in this Oscar category.

 Crazy Lady Funny Joke
A little old lady walked into the head branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank holding a large paper bag in her hand.
With her was a younger man. When he inquired as to the man's purpose for being there, she informed him that he was her lawyer and she always took him along when there was this much money involved.
The lady seemed to accept this, but requested that she be able to see for herself.

Funny Lady - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Funny Lady was a musical film of 1975, starring Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif.
The film was a sequel to the more successful Funny Girl, and dealt with the later career of the leading figure, real-life entertainer, Fanny Brice, including her marriage to songwriter and stage producer Billy Rose (played in the film by James Caan).
A main critique of the film is that Billy Rose was made to look like an "All-American," when in fact he was as Jewish-looking as Brice.

A sequel to this classic was not something that was ever needed to be made, but since the original was so successful (FUNNY GIRL was the highest-grossing film of 1968) and well-loved, it was pretty obvious why producer Ray Stark wanted to make this follow-up so badly.
Although the film was generally well-received by most critics and proved to be another big box office hit, many fans of the sweet-natured original did not care for the slightly more harsh and cynical tone of this follow-up, and it has since fallen out of favor with many Streisand fans.
No, FUNNY LADY doesn't hold a candle to FUNNY GIRL, but the film remains a fun and enjoyable ride that should entertain those who loved the original.

In the sequel, Funny Lady, Brice comes off as a harsher woman, slightly bitchy, without the tremendous charm she possessed in the first film.
It is also said that Streisand's burgeoning love affair with former hairdresser Jon Peters sustained her during the filming of FUNNY LADY - as if the the romance made up for the fact that the work on a FUNNY GIRL sequel was unfulfilling.
In someways I think that Funny Lady is better than Funny Girl as it explores the more mature Fanny Brice and the complexity of the person regarding relationships.

Brice's glory days are explored against the background of her turbulent private life with her flawed playboy husband Nicky Arnstein (a sympathetic performance from Omar Sharif) with considerable attention to the details of her inner turmoil.
More rambling and less cohesive, Funny Lady finds Fanny divorced but still in love with Arnstein (Sharif also revisiting his role), drifting into marriage number two with uncouth songwriter and impresario Billy Rose (the excellent James Caan), her successful career again juxtaposed with a less than happy personal life.
In Funny Girl, the bravura of the performance as a whole masks occasional gaucheness, while if Funny Lady is the less impressive picture overall, it still marks how far she has developed as a screen actress.
